About this project
Hi. Thank you very much for your interest in my project. My name is Andy and I am a humanitarian photographer from Uganda now living in the USA. I would like to publish an inspiring pictorial book that will depict the hope that micro-finance can bring to individuals and families. I am a poster child of the benefits of micro-finance, having grown up in a very poor in a poor country and yet making it somehow.
My story is not unique! It is a story of millions of people around the world, in fact, one billion people, whose dreams could be made real through small loans. I want to get stories of those people that have been changed, and those who look towards the future with hope, unbowed by current challenges and circumstances.
This will be the initial book project, estimated to have one hundred days of powerful images and reflections/devotionals/inspiration from 100 unique writers from different walks of life. In future, we will do a 365 day daily inspirational, but these are the initial steps. I would like to capture stories in Asia, South America, Eastern Europe and Africa. Poverty has no boundaries, but love conquers all things.

I was born very many years ago to a resilient, hardworking, tough, loving and no-nonsense mother. Girls were never welcome at home :(
My mom wanted us to have what her parents couldn’t give her; a good education. She worked day and night, putting together a very small business (not small businesses the kind that Pres. Obama talks about), a real small business according to African standards. I don’t remember mom ever buying herself a new pair of shoes or a new dress or anything. She always saved up for our education even though most times it did not add up and I would often get chased from school for tuition.
My childhood best friend’s dad had cameras and a dark room. We would sneak in while he was away. That’s how I got into photography. But I did not pursue this until years later, after completing my undergraduate and graduate school education. Since about 2008, I have been actively following my dream as a visual story teller with an emphasis to documentary/humanitarian photography. I have visually communicated on maternal health, education, politics, clean water, environment and climate change but there is nothing as so personal to me as micro-finance and poverty.
My work has received recognition with awards from the Gates Foundation, Soros Foundation; a documentary photography fellowship from the Open Society International, and have completed projects with USAID, UNDP, Danish Agency for International Development, Netherlands Development Organization, and other organizations.
