About this project

I propose to create a series of videos, each focused on a particular artist, that unites the fractured web of underground culture in America creating a snapshot of this scene in 2011. The series will be in 6-parts, each spotlighting a different artist, musician, shaman or figurehead in the American Arts Underground. Each part will focus on a particular person in their own environment: at home, on tour, at work, and social settings. All of the artists have been chosen from a vast interconnected network that is the American arts and music underground of today. The idea is to show each person in the context of both their particular niche within that network, as well as against the backdrop of the underground as a whole. The range of subjects will also demonstrate a multi-generational view of this particular subculture; subjects range from 20-60 yrs old, and will represent The East Coast, The Mid-Atlantic, The Deep South, The Mid-West, The West Coast, and all of the US. I will also depict how all of the subjects know each other and have lives that overlap with one another, creating a vision of the underground as an entity beyond the subjects themselves.

I plan to spend a month with each subject, filming with them, documenting their day to day existence and creative lives. I will be working with a creative partner, and together we will shoot on Super-VHS Film, a format I am currently using for all my film projects. The money will be used to cover travel expenses, which for the most part means gas money for traversing the country with the subjects. I also need the money to buy high resolution Super-VHS film, and since it is documentary, the more footage I can get the better, as there is never any assurance of what will happen when. The funding will also cover editing costs such as film to digital transferring, studio time and all other post-production expenses. In addition, it will allow me to begin my project immediately which is imperative as the documentary focuses on this particular moment in time.

The Series will air on my Baltimore Cable Access Show "Psyched on 75" as well as be premiered in a handful of major cities across America.

"...Andy wields a wide variety of work that he delivers deliberately without a flake of dabbling, it charms the world all around him. Through provocative VHS journals, bizzare electronic tape editions, stuffed kittens grinning a death mask, action ritual and life reflecting performance, he conducts his reality with a striking style of his own..."
