HELP US make history in producing the first ever Brazilian gay series.
Brazil is thought of as a very liberal and gay friendly country. Brazil even hosts the largest gay parade in the world! But - the truth is quite different.
BRAZIL has never produced a gay television show and most gay characters on television are caricatures and used for laughs. This lack of sensitivity in the media shows in the staggering number of hate crimes committed against GLBT people in Brazil. caRIOcas is a series that aims to give a voice and a face to millions of gay, bisexual and transgendered men and women who are still marginalized and shamed everyday for being different.
THE SHOW: “caRIOcas” is the first series to focus exclusively on the lives of gay Brazilian men. Set against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities in the world, “caRIOcas” explores the daily lives of Rodrigo, Paulo, Marcos and Caio, four twenty-something Brazilian gay men in Rio de Janeiro, through their relationships with their family, friends and lovers.
Having lived in Los Angeles for the last eight years after the success of his first book, twenty-six year-old Rodrigo Pena is unexpectedly called back to Brazil for a family emergency.
From the moment he lands in the “marvelous city,” Rodrigo feels like a tourist in his own country. The cultural differences between life in America and Brazil are more apparent than ever.
If that weren’t enough, his friends’ personal lives seem to be spiraling out of control. Marcos is sleeping with a married man Leo (Soap star Sérgio Menezes). Pro-beach volleyball player, Paulo (Marcello Melo Jr.- City of God, Last Stop 174), is sleeping with just about everyone on the beach except for his assistant Caio, the lovesick Eighteen year-old from a modest background.
Rodrigo’s mother, Betty, is recovering from yet another botched plastic surgery with the aide of a bevy of prescription pills. For his part, Rodrigo has been avoiding his first love, Felipe, ever since they bumped into one another on Ipanema beach.
More certain than ever, Rodrigo believes he's finally found love and happiness in the US with his longtime boyfriend Danny, and is unwillingly to fully embrace his heritage and counts the days until his return to Los Angeles.
However, after a few weeks with his best friends and mother, Rodrigo begins to fall in love with Rio and wonders why he ever left. He, along with his boys, must still deal with the everyday drama that comes with being a gay carioca. From new boyfriends to life in the closet, from strained friendships to career changes, Rodrigo discovers that these men persevere and live their lives with a combination of passion, humor and grace.
YOUR PLEDGE: We have shot the pilot for the series which we hope will be shown on Brazilian television soon, but in the meantime we will release 5-10 minute episodes on our website cariocas.tv. We already cut 5 "webisodes" and our goal is to produce 10 additional 5-10 minute episodes so that we can have a full web season which will also be available on DVD. Your pledge will helps us finish a minimum of 10 more webisodes and will also allow us to design our website where we will showcase the series, feature cast photos and videos and much more!
We will launch the series online in 2010 and show the Brazilian networks that there is an interest in shows that are entertaining and yet depict GLBT people with dignity and respect.

Brazilian native André Mello is a writer, producer director, actor and multi-media artist who began his career at the age of nineteen at Bloomberg Television in New York City while pursuing his Bachelor's degree in Film.
Since then, he has held several positions in the media field such as video editor, production coordinator and producer in the following areas: News, Video News Releases, Satellite Media Tours, Radio Media Tours, Corporate Videos, PSAs, Commercials, Documentaries, Music videos and Feature Films. He has worked with prestigious companies such as: AOL, Red Cross, UNICEF and Glaxo Smith Kline
In 2000, he produced the documentary "Live and let Ride", a look into the competitive world of girl skateboarding, which has been shown in numerous festivals around the world. In 2006, Mr. Mello was awarded the esteemed Telly Award for his production work.
Since moving to Los Angeles in the Fall of 2005, Mr. Mello has been focusing on his Film making career as a writer/director, producer and actor. In 2009, Mr. Mello co-created, produced, directed and starred in caRIOcas, the first Brazilian gay series ever made. He has also directed the first music video for Brazilian singer Silvia Machete, hailed by the critics as Brazil's next big star and produced and directed a trailer for the novel "Spin" by Robert Rave (St. Martins Press).
