Amasong: Champaign-Urbana’s Premier Lesbian/Feminist Chorus
The song you hear in the background of our video is a live performance by Amasong of "Ise Oluwa." Translation: What the spirits have created can never be destroyed. This traditional Yoruba song from West Africa has been a favorite of Amasong since the early days of the chorus, and was performed as the finale of our 20th Anniversary Concerts in 2011. This performance captures the spirit of Amasong: our commitment to music that affirms the lives of all women, our joy in sharing music from around the world, and our passion for singing together with excellence.
Amasong is an award-winning amateur chorus dedicated to choral excellence in an atmosphere that celebrates all forms of women's devotion to women. With over 20 years of sisterly musical community, Amasong's repertoire includes a wide range of music from diverse sources. Our programs focus on folk songs from various world traditions, music written by women, musical settings of women's words, and other music reflecting women's experiences. Amasong has released four professionally produced CDs, including two GLAMA award-winners. Amasong has also been the subject of the moving documentary, The Amasong Chorus: Singing Out, by award-winning film-maker Jay Rosenstein, which has been seen on PBS stations around the country.
Amasong wants to produce a new album based upon the last four amazing years of professional, live concert recordings, including 2011’s twentieth anniversary performance. The CD is already recorded—we just have to produce it! Over all, we expect the project to cost about $15,000 for mixing, mastering, licensing music, producing a booklet to accompany the CD, professionally printing CDs with eco-friendly packaging, and—for the first time—digital distribution. If we can raise at least $7,500 on Kickstarter, Amasong's board of directors has pledged to match the rest of the project cost. Our concerts have already been recorded by Pogo Studio, who have produced Amasong's last four CDs as well as albums by well-known musicians such as Alison Krauss. Sound wizard Mark Rubel of Pogo Studio will do the mixing, and other local professionals will be employed at every step of the game. We want to get Amasong's new music into the hands of our community near and far, so please give generously!
