Research of an unusual 6th century Irish brooch with a unique combination of iconography not seen elsewhere.
This July I will be flying to Ireland as part of a Research Travel Award to conduct art historical research on a 6th-7th century brooch. What's great about this brooch is that it is a recent find and only one other person has published on it! This is a great opportunity for someone like me who is just starting out in field research. Plus this will also be the first time I've had an opportunity to travel. I have never been outside of country and I'm going to be going all by myself (yikes!).
The reason this trip is important is because it gives me the chance to do on the ground research and see the actual historical artifacts in person rather than having to make due with a single frontal view photograph. I'll be coming at this from more than just a historical angle as well; I'm a Fine Arts major so I'll be looking at the craftsmanship, elements of design and taking some up close and personal photos of the brooch to show the artist's hand in its construction (the thickness, hatch marks from where the enamel used to be, texture and some macro shots of those minute Celtic details!
Beyond the artistic viewpoint, this brooch is special; it has a unique design that speaks to it's origins. During the trip I will be investigating those origins and trying to solve the mystery of it's iconography.
So earlier I mentioned a travel award. That is something that I had to write a detailed grant proposal for and luckily, mine was chosen. The downside is that the travel award is just enough to get me there and not much else. I will only be there for 3 weeks, but I need funds to pay for rooms at hostels and farmhouses out in the rural parts of the country. My plane ticket is booked and paid for, but it would be nice to guarantee a roof over my head for the full duration of the trip.
That is where you come in. I'm going regardless, but I could sure use some help filling in the financial gap. I've got some great rewards listed that I hope you will like. Everything will be made by me with care to ensure that you receive the best I have to offer.
If you want to see an example of my prints (part of one reward offered) head on over to my website: www.inkyhands.net. From there you can find tabs to examples of my photography and bookbinding skills.
Thanks for visiting my project!
I am going to be taking photos of Ogham stones, beehive huts and anything related to archaeology and Irish history that I come across. I will also be taking landscape and seascape photos, photos of the villages I come across and anything else that grabs my attention. There will be a lot to choose from. If you have a preference for why style of photo set, just let me know and I would be happy to accommodate you.
Later on I will have examples of the types of photo sets and calendars posted to my research blog after I return from Ireland.
