Carneys Point is the story of a woman's life, fractured into three facets each representing an important crossroad of her life.
Update #1: Thank You!
Wow! In less than a week we've already reached the initial goal of $1300! Thank you all so much for both donating and spreading the word about our project! It means so much to us!
We want to give a very special thanks to Fifties Frames (fiftiesframes.com). They have made a generous donation of authentic vintage 1950's style horn-rimmed glasses for our main character, the little girl, to wear. Please visit their site! They have an amazing collection of vintage eyeglasses and we can't thank them enough for their contribution!
So what's next now that we have reached the initial goal? This is still the beginning of our fundraising process, exceeding our goal will only make this project stronger and help get it out to more people.
Because Kickstarter is all or nothing, and because we underestimated the support we would receive, we were hesitant to set the goal any higher than $1300, despite being well aware of the expenses of shooting on 16mm film. (For example film processing alone will cost approximately $1200)
So to all of you who have donated thank you so much! We couldn't ask for more! And to all who have spread the word, please continue to let people know about our project. We can still use all the help we can get!
Marla and Alex
Carneys Point is the story of a woman's life, fractured into three facets each representing an important crossroad of a single life: the disenchanting prelude to the coming of age, the anxiety of motherhood, and the mental decay of old age.
Carneys Point is the name of the town Alex's grandmother called home for most of her life. In 2005 Alex's grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. 1 in 8 older Americans suffer from Alzheimer's and the number is growing rapidly. Despite being discovered over 100 years ago, the causes of Alzheimer's disease remain unknown.
In 2010, we each made two short documentaries:
Scraps from Dinner is about the attempt to capture the slowly dissolving memories of Sunday dinner held by Marla's two great aunts and great uncle. Though their house remains unchanged, a relic from the fifties, the spirit of it has not. Old slides are the only evidence that something, other than stillness, used to exist in their house.
Yours Forever, Alice is about Alex's grandmother's decline into the depths of dementia. The film began as an exposé on the disease she suffers from, but became a film about everything that is lost by this terrible illness. The project became less about Alzheimer's and more about Alex's love for his grandmother. He discovered through this process that art isn't just about informing the head but also affecting the heart.
In the spring of 2011, we worked on My Svetu Dozijeme (Worlds We Live to See) while studying at FAMU in the Czech Republic. This film follows the story of a father and daughter who come to terms with his mortality. As the old man finds himself becoming less physically capable of performing even the simplest of tasks, he decides to embark on a journey toward contentment.
As a continuation of the themes found in our previous works, Carneys Point will expand upon the idea of memories and the natural disjunction and embellishment that occurs over time.
Over the past three years in film school we have fallen in love with the process of exposing 16mm film stock. Though expensive, we believe that it has a tangible quality that digital video can't compete with and as such, we find it very important to shoot this project on film.
Carneys Point will be shot in a naturalistic, hand-held manner with stylized sets and costuming. We hope to capture both fantastical and grounded pieces of memory and explore what occurs when these elements momentarily collide with one another.
In order to make this project possible we need funding to pay for film stock, film processing, actors, as well as transportation for our actors, props and costumes.
In making Carneys Point we are hoping to pay tribute to Alex’s grandmother. We strongly believe that this film will be valuable in raising awareness about Alzheimer's disease and its effects on both those who are diagnosed as well as their families.
All donations to this project will not only make Carneys Point a stronger film, but will allow us to reach a wider audience. The more funding we have for this project, the more awareness we can raise.
Because Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, we ask you to please consider helping us reach our goal of $1,300. Every dollar counts.
