A documentary on girls with natural red hair that includes animation, interviews, music videos, short films and more...
NEW REWARD LEVEL: REDHEAD PRINT COLLECTION
DONATE NOW IF YOU LOVE REDHEADS!
The new documentary film,
Ginger Girls: The Secret Lives of Redheads, chronicles the
misconceptions about redheads. American filmmaker Alexia Anastasio
wanted to find out the secret lives of redheaded girls or as they are
called "gingers," validating the terminology. Herself a redhead, she
toured the United States in search of redheaded women with stories to
tell, interviewing and photographing them. What’s a secret life? The
secret struggle. The effort necessary to succeed that nobody sees--
talent, courage & determination. It's true what you hear about
redheads. Hot temper. The get attention. They get ridiculed. Good in
bed. But most of all-- everyone agrees they stand out from the pack.
Some women think it’s a handicap, some think it’s a blessing. Some want
to dye their hair to escape the stigma, while other women want to dye
their hair to "ginger" color. They are the 2%.
Ginger Girls: The Secret Lives of Redheads, focuses on the lives of eight unique women. Through Anastasio's lens we meet a veteran model, a Shakespearean actor, a singer, a girl with learning disabilities, women CEO's, and more. Will they embrace their image and live with the stereotypes-- or try to break the mold?

What are the Press saying about Ginger Girls?
Director's Statement by Alexia Anastasio
As a redhead I have had an interesting time growing up. I was made fun of, people developed crushes on me without even talking to me. Basically I was the most noticeable person in the room and sometime still am, yet I’ve always got most of the attention from my hair. Strangers would compliment me and ask where I got my beautiful hair. I would say my parents as it took two of them in my case. My mother’s hair turned brown when she got older and my father’s hair went from red to white. When I see other redheads I don’t say “Redheads Unite.” At least not until I started this project. Before this project I didn’t even address it. Usually redheads rarely talk to other redheads about being a redhead. Which I thought was odd since there are many issues at stake from fair skin, freckling, looking younger than you actually are to even being a female to stereotypes and what that means to you and the people around you. I have always been an observer but as a redhead I feel that is where the actress part of me comes out from that wild and wacky side which was excused since I was a redhead. I feel that redheads can be as quirky, feisty and passionate as the stereotype suggests. In this project I will investigate what other redhead girls have to say about their experiences and how they think and feel about being a Ginger Girl.
Genesis of the Ginger Project
Ginger Girls is a multi-platform project.-- a documentary, a book of photographs and an interactive art show.
So far, Anastasio has interviewed and photographed 60 girls and counting of 500 girls that will be in the project.
The target audience is women with red hair, and men and women who love them.
This anthropological study is a time capsule as it is predicted that their will be no Gingers left in a hundred years.
As the documentary will be eventually an exhibit, Anastasio has started work with animation producer Mina Sanwald (of the Bill Plympton Studio) to complete animated segments..
Beyond Gingers, there is a wide audience to promote to everyone harnessing the power of Ginger!
