Nothing about this coming-of-age story (wherein a 28-year-old gay man deals with independence, love, and familial secrets) is average.
My name is Alex Sarmiento, and I have been working on a novel called SAINT GRAZIANO THE GOOD since the fall of 2009. Initially I had set it in my hometown of San Francisco, but that all changed when I took a Spring Break vacation to Toronto in April of that year. Technically, it was spring, but 24 hours after I landed, it was snowing. I fell in love with the city during my week-long vacation, and it was truly the best week of my life. Later that year, I decided to begin work on my novel, and in tribute to the largest city in Canada, I set my novel there.
Right now, I'm unemployed and a part-time student. Writing is what I know how to do best. Writing helps me keep my sanity. I've written short stories and poems over the years, but SAINT GRAZIANO THE GOOD is my first major attempt at becoming a novelist.
It's 2009. The decade is coming to a close. Graziano Buonfiglio is 28 years old, and living with his parents just outside of Toronto. And he hates it. His parents, Nadine and Joseph, along with his sister Charlotte, are emotionally, verbally, and physically abusive... and have been since birth. And he still mourns his beloved grandparents and boyfriend, who all died under mysterious circumstances. On the night of his 28th birthday, rather than spending it at a favorite restaurant, he has to endure his cousin' garishly over-the-top cotillion/18th birthday party. Upset, he attempts suicide in the bathroom. Less than 24 hours later, at the hospital, his family asks him to leave their home and never come back.
With his cat Britney in tow, Graziano heads back to Toronto and eventually ends up in the spacious apartment of his former English professor, Brandon Gutensohn. Not only does Brandon provide his former student with a comfortable home and friendship, he sets him up with a therapist: Claire Breedlove, who in turn becomes the mother figure that his own mother never was. Graziano later reunites with a former high school friend, Mykhaylo Karbanenko, who has long held a torch for him. His relationships deepen and his emotional and professional prospects improve greatly, meaning that there's a bright future for Graziano.
But his past threatens to cloud or even end that future. A chance run-in with his estranged family doesn't end well, and soon they set in motion a chain of events that lead to Graziano learning the real truth about his loved ones' deaths, and a final showdown on Christmas Eve where everything, including a shocking personal secret, is revealed.
I have completed 31 chapters out of what I estimate will be a 38-chapter novel.
FUNDING FOR THIS PROJECT HOPEFULLY WILL BE MADE POSSIBLE BY...
...people like you, who love a good Bildungsroman (the German word for what is essentially a coming-of-age story). In order to finish this book and to give it the polish and shine that it needs to be worth the reader's time and money, I need at least $1,000. As someone who has never undertaken anything like this before, I still have a lot to learn. But I figure that $1,000 is a good place to start. Writing and editing the manuscript is the easy part; getting a cover and getting people to financially support my work is way more difficult. If I get more than that, it will be great, but as long as I get the minimum, I can sort of rest easy. I plan on publishing the book through desktop publishing, with the hope of eventually attracting a publisher.
