Cutting-edge technology propels this new play about a paranoid artist and a lonely soldier watching the world through a bullet hole.
The Man with America Skin is a new play that pushes the boundaries of technology and theatre. Using poetic language and cutting edge projection work, award-winning playwright Seth Moore explores the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on both a lost, lonely artist and wandering soldier.
And this August, it's coming to New York.
Though the script won a Hopwood award three years ago, this off-Broadway production will be the show's world premiere. Presented by Blue Fire Productions as part of the 2012 Araca Project, the August run will take place at the American Theatre of Actors in midtown Manhattan. We couldn't be more excited about this opportunity, but we can't do it alone.
INNOVATIVE DESIGN + OFF-BROADWAY RUN = EXPENSIVE SHOW
The thing about producing exciting, live theatre with great design is that, well, it costs money. A lot of money in fact. Though the theatre space is generously provided by the Araca Project, there are many other costs involved in mounting this show. Some of them include:
Projection Rental; Projection Design; Rehearsal Space; Lighting Package; Insurance; Designer Fees; Set Materials; Props; Makeup/Scar Design; Costumes; Ticketing Services; Sound Design; Actors; Stage Managers... You get the idea.
With your contribution, you can help us bring this new show to the stage. Plus, you can score some pretty awesome rewards; Check them out to the right!
What is it about the design that makes The Man With America Skin so unique?
The show takes place in a dilapidated apartment, complete with kitchen, bathroom, bare beams, and rotting drywall. But through a chance turn of events, the apartment itself is turned into a camera obscura, and an image of the outside world is thrown up onto one of the crumbling walls. The actors then interact with this projection in variety of ways that are pretty breathtaking to behold... You'll have to see the show to see exactly how! But needless to say, the sort of planning and design that goes into this kind of stage environment requires a very talented artist.
Fortunately, we have Justin Lang.
Justin has collaborated with playwright Seth Moore previously, designing both the set and projections for the award-winning play Jonesin'. This sort of immersive design is Lang's signature style, where projections are more than backdrops, becoming full interactive playgrounds for the actors on stage.
Intrigued? You can come see the show August 16th - 26th at the American Theatre of Actors (314 W 54th Street). $25 tickets can be purchased online at our website.

ABOUT THE ARACA PROJECT
The Araca Project joins Syracuse University and the University of Michigan in The Araca Group's commitment to early career development. After pitching their projects in April, selected participants spend two weeks of June in a Producing Intensive before producing their work at The American Theatre for Actors in New York City. By giving artists the opportunity to take on the full artistic and fiscal responsibilities of producing their work Off-Broadway, The Araca Project endeavors to embolden these artists to recognize the power of the entrepreneurial spirit in shaping one’s artistic destiny.
