Memphis, TN is known for five things: Elvis, barbecue, blues music, basketball, and Beale Street. This film isn't about any of those.
What is Beyond Beale Street?
Beyond Beale Street centers around the city of Memphis, Tennessee. The title was chosen due to the overwhelming attention brought to the five "noteworthy" things of Memphis: barbecue, Elvis, the blues, basketball, and Beale Street, a strip of bars located in the downtown area. While Beale Street does contribute to the tourism industry in Memphis, there is far more to Memphis than one street.
This isn't a big-budget documentary, and there aren't any celebrities featured. This film will highlight the everyday person, the people who are affected every day by not only Memphis' positive traits, but by its faults as well. Why do people decide to stay in a city with a high crime rate, failing public education system, and a local political circus?
Memphis has been featured a lot in recent media, such as "Memphis Beat" in 2011, "Police Women of Memphis" in 2010, "The First 48," and "Undefeated," a documentary which won an Oscar this year. So let's find out the truth about Memphis -- by Memphians.
We plan to start filming in May 2012. We will also have a blog that will be updated with the progress of the film, including production notes and a video summary of what's going on periodically by crew members and director.
Who is making the film?
Alexandra Pusateri is the director, and this is her first feature film under Magnolia & Vineland Productions. She is a Journalism and International Studies double-major at the University of Memphis. She became interested in film after working as a production assistant in Los Angeles on dramas, comedies, and short films. She moved up to a 1st Assistant Director, and moved back home to Memphis to finish her degree.
Why are you raising money?
We already have most of the equipment. Now it's time to get the ball rolling on actual production. This $6,000 will cover the legal expenses, small equipment purchases, food for crew members, travel to locations, film festival fees, soundtrack, some archived news footage, and an editor. If the budget exceeds our goal, we will be able to afford more archived news footage, distribute, and have a large screening in Memphis!
We want to answer questions that residents have been asking, and get down to the bottom of issues that have plagued Memphis. Our ultimate goal is truth, and to shine light on that truth.
No, absolutely not! Backers have come from all over the US and the UK! It doesn't matter if you've lived in Memphis, never been to Memphis, or just like documentaries!
No, it won't charge your pledged amount until May 7th, when we hit our goal!
