Update #4: Come see the show!!!!

Posted on March 11

Dear wonderful friends of "other stories,"

The time has finally arrived for our NY friends to be able to see the show in action. Thanks to your wonderful contributions last year, we built a gorgeous house and it has been remarkably generous in its artistic inspiration... It truly shifted the work. We had an extremely successful premiere at the gorgeous ICA in Boston in July. We will be performing with our beautiful house for three weeks in April at Joyce SoHo. Come see it in action!

Above is the link for the show. I hope to see you all there and share our thanks through sharing the work with you.

All my best,

Alexandra

Update #3: Last minute emergency!

Posted on December 13, 2010

Hi all you generous and wonderful contributors,

We had a very amazing pledge just cancel their donation and it has thrown the funding for a major set back. We were 155% funded and now we are below our goal again with only a week left to go. I thank you utterly for your contributions, which I won't receive unless I reach the goal... I stopped pushing two weeks ago when we fulfilled our goal because it felt awkward to ask for so much more than our goal, but now we are in trouble... Can you kindly send a recommendation to your friends to contribute a little something to get us back over the top again? I was so excited to be there and so surprised that we suddenly are not there...

To the backer who pulled out, I hope it wasn't because I didn't communicate with you. I tried and tried to find a way to send you a personal thank you but was not allowed to communicate directly until after the campaign ended...

Thank you all for your help in trying to make our dream set become a reality! I really appreciate your support and kindness.

All my best,

Alexandra

Update #2: Thank you all so much!

Posted on December 6, 2010

Thank you so much for helping me to create this set. I am intensely gratified to have received such kind, warm, generous support from so many people. Those of you whom I know have touched me in one way and those of you who are new to me have moved me in another, both equally striking and loving. I thank you all. If you are checking out the site for the first time in order to make a contribution, please don't let the generosity of your neighbors deter you; we can definitely use more funds to create this project. I set the salaries and materials at a bare minimum to make this dream come true, which it has, but I am thrilled to continue dreaming it up and raising artist stipends!

Thank you thank you thank you all and welcome to anyone still interested in being involved!

Love,

Alexandra

Update #1: Thank you so far!

Posted on November 27, 2010

Obviously it's nice to get a grant from a traditional funder, and I can say that there is certainly a great rush to opening that rare letter that has good news in it... But I must tell you that no grant so far has compared to the rush of warmth and love I have every single time I get an email that someone has backed the project. Art making can be a very lonely event and it is easy to slip into a feeling that no one appreciates what you do. To have friends, old and new, contributing to help me construct my work is one of the most gratifying events in my art life. I really thank each one of you from my heart for your contributions so far; they have warmed and helped me, each one.

Thank you! You have paid for a hinge. Can't build a door without a hinge, that would be silly. We can now open the door to our set because of you, and we send you a thank you, and an open door and a magnet for your fridge with a pretty dancing picture on it!

Pledge $20 or more Pledge $20 or more

Thanks a lot! You have paid for the wood for one step on the staircase that leads to the loft. Without that step, how would they get to the top? We send you a big thank you, and a listing in the program under "Friends," and 2 different magnets for your fridge with pretty dancing pictures on them.

Holy moly, thank you so much! You have paid for a whole leg of the loft. A three legged loft is not a structure I am going to put these gorgeous dancers on top of, so you have really made our day. we send you a heart thank you(my dancers especially are happy about this one), a listing in our program under "Supporters," an invitation to our invitation-only rehearsal in NYC, and to the after party in Boston at the premiere (and 2 magnets for your fridge with pretty dancing pictures on them).

Wow, thank you so much! You have paid for the lighting inside the ground level space. I am excited about what will happen in that space, but without the light, no one would get to see it... So you're contribution has really changed our world. We send you all of the above plus a listing on the website as a friend for the lifespan of this piece.

That's incredible. You have paid for the platform on top of which the dancers will dance. Without foundational support like yours, where would we dance? We thank you so much!! If we find 25 people as generous as you, we have what we need! We offer you, with our gratitude, everything listed above: an invitation to a private rehearsal, an invitation to the after party in Boston, a listing as a supporter on our website and the program for the lifespan of the work, one ticket to the premiere in Boston and 2 magnets for your fridge with pretty dancing pictures on them.

That's 10% of our goal! That is amazing and so gratifying. You have paid for all the wood for the whole platform, so you have provided us with what we need to build. Thank you... Obviously you get all of the above, with TWO tickets to the Boston premiere, a listing in the program in Boston as a "Patron," and 2 magnets for your fridge with pretty dancing pictures on them.

We could not do this without you. You are really making something happen for us and we are so thankful. Your generous contribution pays the amazing designer for his creativity and time and allows us to support another artist in his work as well as make our beautiful set. In addition to any of the above benefits, we offer you one out-of-print Irving Penn book from his series of photographs of Alexandra Beller entitled, "Dancer," and 2 magnets for your fridge with pretty dancing pictures on them. We will also send you a DVD of the show from Boston with your name in the credits.

Connected as Alexandra Beller (2761 friends)

I have had the amazing opportunity to work as a performer with Bill T. Jones, Martha Clarke and Charles Mee, John Turturro, Irving Penn and other luminaries who have taught and fed me. In 2001 I made the foolhardy and exhilarating choice to start my own Dance Theater company, Alexandra Beller/Dances. I have toured to Korea, Hong Kong, Oslo, Amsterdam, Poland, Russia, Cyprus, and throughout the US and am delighted to keep pushing ahead making art.
