Alexandra Beller/Dances is thrilled to be working on a phenomenal, evocative set for the premiere of "other stories" this July.
OK, here's the context:
Our Dance Theater company, Alexandra Beller/Dances, has been working for almost a year on this new piece, "other stories," which we really love. Other people seem to really love it too, and it is being beautifully, generously produced by ICA and Summer Stages in Boston next summer (July 2011). We are incredibly excited to continue making it.
We raised, and have been given, a nice percentage of our $25,000 budget ($20,000) and are thrilled to be able to pay the dancers for rehearsals, offer a rehearsal stipend to the composer and work consistently without micromanaging our time in the studio. What a great relief to have had this support...
But here's the thing:
I have this idea for a set which I have fallen completely in love with. I'm obsessed with making it part of the work, and can't imagine the piece without it now... But we didn't budget for a set design and this one, as per my usual penchant for visual drama, will cost us $2500 to make. We have enough for almost everything else and have a plan to get what we don't have, but this idea, this dream set, is a thing unto itself and I thought kickstarter might be the place to make it a reality.
It will cost $2500 to design and create and additional funds to travel with on tour, but our current desire is to get it made so we can work with it, live in it, challenge it, and create space for it in the work. The piece, called "other stories" is about how we live in a world where our stories don't align with other people's stories about both the personal (think about your moral compass, your faith, your thoughts about mortality), and the political (think Gay Marriage, gender stereotypes, Universal Health care). This room, this set, is the place where the performers would reveal these stories, reveal the friction between each other and be able to speak to the audience from the most evocative of locations: a home.
