Five continents. An unknown sport. One team. One family.
About the Film
In this exploration of the power of sports, immigrants from more than 15 countries find an unlikely family in New York City through an Olympic sport that no one in America knows: team handball.
The squad seeks to defend its national title and cement its reputation as the "world's handball club," a group of friends that speak a common language on and off the court. Meanwhile, the only homegrown American strives to make Team USA and represent his country.
Several months ago, we published an article in The New York Times about the team, the New York City Team Handball Club (NYCTH). Now, we're taking this unique and inspiring story to the big screen, making the first ever English-language film about team handball.
Why We Need Your Help
Let's use a sports analogy. (We'd like to make a team handball reference here, but we'll wait until you see the whole movie.) So, say we're running a marathon. We've trained for months and we're like 22.2 miles into the race; we just need a little boost for the final 4.
We've been working on this film for almost a year. It started as our Columbia Journalism School thesis, but it's become so much more. We believe that HOME COURT deserves to reach a wider audience.
We shot countless hours of footage, and we've edited what we believe to be a fantastic first version. But it's not quite finished yet, and now, as independent filmmakers, we don't quite have the money to do HOME COURT complete justice and make it as great as it can/should be.
We need finishing funds for the following things:
- There's an incredible composer whom we want to compose/produce the music. Unfortunately he doesn't work just for high fives and back rubs.
- Professional sound design and color correction. We want HOME COURT to look and sound as amazing as it can.
- Film festival entry fees. Believe it or not, we haven't yet been contacted by Sundance.
- A little more shooting/editing.
Thanks so much for taking the time to check out HOME COURT. We'd love to have you join the team. Any donations (and the kind souls connected to the cold, hard cash) will be forever appreciated.
Please feel free to share this all over social media and with random people on the street.

HOME COURT is almost done; we just need your help to get to the finish line. As first-time filmmakers, we understand how hard making a documentary can be, but we are so passionate about this story and firmly believe in its power. Making a film about an unknown sport is challenging, which is why we need some archival material to help explain some of the history of handball and its prominence around the world. We luckily have incredible access to our team, but might have some difficulties in securing rights to other types of footage or music. We are also confronting a bit of a timeline challenge in that we want to get this story out there as soon as possible since it pertains specifically to the 2012 national championship. And since we've graduated from Columbia, we no longer have access to equipment and editing facilities so we need this boost to help us with the additional shooting and editing the film requires. Ultimately, with your support, we can make HOME COURT truly amazing. Thanks again!
