About this project

Even on a modest scale, independently producing a rock musical in the heart of Europe is a very expensive proposal. AKANDA is trying to raise money to help cover the following expenses:

  • Music rental and performance rights.
  • Costumes and makeup.
  • Actor and musician fees.
  • Equipment rental, lighting and sound.

These expenses will cost several times the amount of money we are trying to raise through our Kickstarter campaign. Through Kickstarter we are hoping to make these costs more manageable so that we may continue making quality theatre in the future.

As a show of appreciation for your support, AKANDA will greatfully send you various tasty gifts which you can read about elsewhere on this page.

On the 15, 16, 22, 23 April, the experimental theatre company AKANDA will present HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, the legendary cult rock musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Steven Trask. This is the story of punk rock song stylist Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock ‘n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a sex-change operation gone wrong. Hedwig’s tale begins in East Berlin just before the downfall of Communism and then moves through the bleak landscapes of Midwestern America as she searches for wholeness and self-completion. Her saga finally culminates right here right now in a glam-spattered cellar in the center of Prague… easily one of the most perverse and unexpectedly beautiful stories ever told.

Under the guidance of Czech-Canadian director Mélanie Rada, an international cast of actors and musicians bring to life AKANDA’s interpretation of this award-winning rock musical. Long-time Prague resident Jeff Fritz plays the title role of Hedwig opposite Uliana Elina, former frontwoman of Russian band SLOT and winner of the 2005 RAMP award for best female vocal, in the role of Yitzhak. Appearing as the Angry Inch are members of local Prague bands Broken Glass Extet and Tristram Trio lead by Ian Mikyska on guitar and Anar Yusufov on keys, with Tomáš Mika on bass and Pharoah Smeaton-Russell on drums. Production design and video projections created by Estonian artist Johanna-Mai Vihalem for the stage of Iron Curtain, a club, bar and restaurant containing numerous artifacts of the Cold War era and the memory of the dissidents who tore it all down.

is a Prague-based theatre company which creates original non-conventional movement productions and both non-verbal and text-based rock n roll theatre, all designed to make people THINK MORE.
The company's core members are Artistic Director Mélanie Rada, Production Manager Jeff Fritz, and Production Designer Johanna-Mai Vihalem. In addition to creating and acting in the shows, they work with a variety of other actors and theatre artists to bring to the stage unique visions of well-crafted chaos which are not always polite or socially acceptable.
The members of Akanda have worked in many of Prague's most well-known theatres including Divadlo Komedie and Divadlo Na Zabradli, and they appeared at Fringe Festival Prague in both 2009 and 2010 where they premiered their debut work, Katatonika, a brutal film noir gangster piece for the stage. Also in 2010 they created and produced the original musical horror show Cabaret Macabre which ran for six weeks in Prague's historic center.
