About this project
Ger is Hebrew for "stranger" or "proselyte" and the documentary film GER: CHOOSING TO BE CHOSEN is the examination of those who are converts to Judaism and identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or queer. The participants of this project come from across the boundaries of familial, socioeconomic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds and traditional movements to give insight into the process of conversion. Ger takes a look into the lives of LGBT Jews by Choice to find the intersection between Jewish and queer identity.
In March of 2003 Reform Jewish institutions officially started welcoming the transgender and bisexual communities to the covenant, whereas gay and lesbian Jews by Choice were officially welcomed by Reform communities by 1982. Even with responsa on record, people still encounter prejudice from within and without the Jewish community. The film touches on aspects of being Jewish that go beyond simply ethnic roots. Exploring Torah, Halakhah, Avodah, T'Shuvah, and G'milut Chasadim as backdrops to what it means to be Jewish in today's world. This film explores the way forward by telling the stories of those who are Jews by Choice and LGBT or Q.
I need your help! I have to finish shooting participants across the San Francisco Bay Area with my already purchased HD camera. Then it is onto post production where I get to weave the personal stories together. All your contributions go toward editing hardware & software, video storage, music rights and other post production costs. Currently I need a Mac loaded with Final Cut Pro to complete any post production work. I will be eternally grateful to each and every one of you for helping me get this one man production off the ground.
