Adam thanks for the great video and sample CX5! As for all the cry babies and whiners out there, guess you were proven wrong, project complete. Another thing, who cares what he did with the money. So he paid the rent and light bill, made a supply of CX5 and maybe ordered a few pizzas. You invested in him and he completed the project and a fantastic job at that! Would have been nicer if sooner then later but hey he finished and that's what counts. Thanks again Adam

I received my video and sample on Monday...takes a while for everything to reach Latvia from the States!
I'll have to say I enjoyed viewing the video. It's enough to get me started with a new product.
I am curious about additional videos.
Hoping to clear some time to play around with CX5 soon.

Hi Adam, I would like to have precisions concerning the safety or toxicity of CX5. When warming it everyone can easily smell a very strong odour, which is quite fine by the way, but it means we are breathing something.
I read somewhere that you were using natural components, but as you probably know natural does not mean non toxic. For example does it contain turpentine? It is sometimes used in wax formulation, it is natural, but it's toxic.
Thanks for giving more details on this point.

I wanted to chime in and say congrats and thank you to Adam for his efforts on the DVD. I’ve been an industry professional for 10 years and feel the first DVD is just what you need- enough to get you started. I always feel the best way to becoming a better artist is to have somebody in the race to chase, strive to achieve the results that the best are doing. I was drawn to this project because I admire Adam’s work(I’ve never met him BTW) and I’m glad he is showing us his technique’s.

Cx5- love this stuff! I put it to the test and I can vouch for how awesome that it is. I have used every kind of clay, wax, modified recipes, you name it to do my work. Castilene can do a lot but lacks in a few important categories which Cx5 fills in. To name one, Cx5 has a much more opaque pigment which is super important for casting shadows and showing surface detail. Learning new materials can trip up even veteran sculptors, I’ve seen it happen. You don’t need a super long video showing every single move. Why sit for hours watching someone work, get sculpting and impress yourself. If I were to do a DVD like this I would take the same approach, start with the tools and materials otherwise there would be a whole new set of complaints. Most sculptors don’t have access to milling machines and lathes so I really like the coated paper and foam techniques as well as the poor man’s lathe with the drill. Brilliant! There’s good stuff here and the best I’m sure is yet to come. Well done Adam!

I gotta say I understand all the frustration everyone is feeling about the delays. But I also have to say - and while I dont pretend to speak for him - he man is an insane perfectionist. The proof is in the sculptures. Im sure the proof will be in the video. I can tell you that any delay in the process definitely comes from a dedicated effort to make his video absolutely perfect, and we'll feel the extra effort (much more than we contributed financially) in the product.

I think it is fair to complain, but I dont think its fair to accuse the man of setting up a vacation fund. Adam is a tireless worker - and anyone who has worked with video knows how things can go amiss of schedule. One lighting mishap might demand a whole reshoot - and with Adam's high standards, I can guess that what will be coming will be of equally high quality.

So - this is just my two cents. More updates? Sure. Quicker turnover? Everyone is in agreement. Scam? I just cant see it. Im just excited to see the video....

      Hi Adam and everyone,

Good request! I think I can give you all a pretty accurate picture of our timeline.

      1. The video is still being mastered, and we just got word yesterday that the mastering process should be complete on Monday. After that, they say it will be 10 business days until we have the finished product delivered.
      2. We have all of the Cx5 material ready to be poured into Kickstarter sample sizes and wrapped. We're going to be doing that while we're waiting for the DVDs to arrive.
      3. We're currently setting up shipping labels to print on demand and all of our boxes were ordered and should be arriving in a couple of days. We'll have teeshirts, thank you letters, and Cx5 waiting in the boxes so once the DVDs arrive we can simply add them in. It should take maybe two days after we receive the DVDs to add them to the packages, tape everything up, print out all the address labels and customs forms, and have a mail truck come and pick all of it up for us!

So - Monday is the 6th, and 10 business days from then is the 18th, and given a couple days to pack… we should be shipping Tuesday the 21st.

Hi Adam, I think there's some frustration born from lack of solid info, your updates are all telling us how great the product is (almost a selling pitch) we know how great it is we all bought it! A few hard facts will go a long way.
So could you please answer the following:
What's the estimated turnaround time given by the DVD manufacturer?
What's the current state of cx5 production?
How long do you expect the organisation of preparing all the rewards to ship (once you have the product) ?
Given that we appreciate the above are only estimates and you have other work to do, what is the estimated shipping time of rewards?
As always looking forward to seeing the results of your hard work. :)

Yes, I did get a refund -( Sure did take a while in doing so - took several times to clear ).
What is truly sad is the out of context Updates you posted to buy more time and of course you don't like it when anyone has sense enough to figure it out for themselves. It's all there - in your own words ! My concern is only for the people who I encouraged to back you.
So, I was right when I stated the quality of this DVD ( the once said 50k production ~LOL) will be THE SAME AS THE PROMO on youtube ( with the exception of *a pain staking cover...)
You have dragged and milked this project out for so long and not until people started getting WISE did you even half -ass answer their questions - I still do not see a shipping date ! - did anyone else catch that ?
You have changed your Woe Is Me stories more times than square dancers change partners !!
People are not fools and you will see that very soon. The journey is not over until you SHIP OUT THE REWARDS PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SO PATIENTLY WAITING FOR.
Like you told me -no matter what, you gotta have a good *GAME FACE* for the public...
I have NOT Demeaned you or your long over due project - you managed to do that all on you own.
So, GET THE LEAD OUT OF YOUR A$$ and Finally DO WHAT YOU LED THESE PEOPLE TO THINK YOU COULD !

I hope this post will finally put to rest any of Patti's concerns, particularly since she is no longer a backer and no longer involved in my Kickstarter project. I am sad to see someone taking a year's journey out of context and demeaning what has been a true labor of love.

Here is the short version of what has been a very long story:

Alexis and I shot the film together, we were the only crew. We actually did buy Final Cut, but then returned it since it wasn't quite what we had been expecting, so it was back to iMovie. One of the projects featured in the video is the Conan O'Brien sculpture, commissioned for Nokia, and the film also features Steve Jobs and a few other sculptures that illustrate different techniques of mine. We thought we would have used far more of the Conan footage, but it turned out that the best instruction actually came from filming each technique scene for scene, independent of any specific project. You'll see a lot of shots taken in the new studio, which we moved to last summer after dealing with multiple structural problems in our old building. The film has taken a few different shapes over the past year, and we got a lot of good advice from the producer and editor we were planning to hire. It turned out that it made more sense for me to edit the film myself, but Nick at Icarus Rex Productions still made it into the credits as the digital media consultant. We went through a number of different audio options, from the onboard mic on our Vixia (bad idea) to a small mounted shotgun mic (still a bad idea) and I ended up recording fantastic voiceover audio in post production on a studio mic. We also designed all the packaging in house, which was an adventure all in itself.

Phew! That was a year for the books. Pretty much everything we planned on, from scripts, to shots, to lighting, evolved part way through the process. In the end, we have a fantastic DVD that will show you new and amazing ways to sculpt, and give you some great real life examples of projects where I have used specific techniques.

To everyone out there, thanks for being a part of the journey.

Quotes from Mr.Beane ( Please read the updates (excuses) blog etc... to see (dates) month and year for yourself. YOU DECIDE ! )

" It was shot by me and one other person on a Canon Vixia"

"We decided we needed to bring in some professional production assistance and have hired a director and
an editor to make sure we are getting it right"

"I was able to cover $17k of that $50k "
"It wasn't a high budget production"
"We are still producing Cx5, filming and editing the video"

"We have gone through two studios, countless microphones, multiple editing programs, not to mention lights…"

"I don't have a film crew- it is just myself and Alexis."

"My first investment is going to be Final Cut Studio, and I can't wait to start using it! iMovie can only get me so far, and these DVDs are going to require better tools than the ones I have now. I'm excited for the editing part, but I'm even more excited to sculpt something self-directed. This is literally going to be the first time in my entire career that I've sculpted something that wasn't commissioned by a company. For that I am indebted to everyone who has pledged their support on Kickstarter"

Huh ??? wasn't that a commissioned sculpt that the DVD is based on ? So.I assume you will still be waiting to sculpt and video and edit a non commissioned piece FOR THE FIRST TIME ... ( Just one of the many conflicting tales of woe... in my opinion ! ) Heck, with the interest I lost I could have bought an entire *Series* from an available source !

      Patti,
I have refunded all of your money, and I apologize that the project did not move as quickly as we all had hoped.

      To everyone else,
I want to let you know that the Kickstarter funds did of course go to shooting and producing the video. It wasn't a high budget production, but even so, it ended up costing more than I had raised on Kickstarter. It was shot by me and one other person on a Canon Vixia, it took me months to edit all 28 hours of footage down into an incredibly tight tutorial video and mix all my own audio, and I'm happy to say that I am proud of every minute of it. I've had professionals in the field quote the cost for a production of this quality at $50k, and are shocked that we did it on the amount we had. What can I say, we're resourceful artists with a love for sculpture, teaching, and editing. Everyone, especially myself, wishes it could have been completed sooner, but there were challenges at every turn. Nevertheless, the video is done (huzzah!), and when you receive it you will all learn new techniques and get an unprecedented look my sculpting process. As you all know, Cx5 production is beginning, but it is financed separately. The Kickstarter commitment has been my number one priority, and now that the DVDs are being pressed (as we speak!!) I will be focusing all of my energy on Cx5 production. You can follow our progress at www.adambeaneindustries.com/blog.

Thank you all again for your patience, I know you're going to love getting your rewards.

My opinion... (Sigh, I guess I will let the above statement speak for itself ! )
Sounds like someone is well stocked ! Never again having to *WAIT* for Cx5 OR A *Video*??!!! Huh ?? How did you MANAGE ALL THAT Mr.BEANE ? How many DVDS are there that never again will anyone have to *WAIT* ??? A Series -perhaps ? !!!

Although I managed to recieve a refund from Mr.Bean. I wish to apologize to all those whom I asked to support this project. ( which was solely a Cx5 business endeavor not a process of making a simple DVD.)
This will be your last chance to voice your opinions on how YOUR MONEY was used & I urge you to do so.
To everyone that had sense enough to question ALL the excuses Mr. Bean was feeding you - Bravo !!!
All the information needed to find this out for youself is there- in each Update- (excuse) Blog - his web page and in the mis-direction he so enchanted on each one of you backers about his struggles & setbacks etc... .
Funny, how his production / manufacturing business (of Cx5 is up and running ...& of course it's right along side the DVD ( taped for a commision that was done months ago ). GO FIGURE !
Mr. Beane said this was a 50k production - (LOL) - Yet, the article from his home town ( check his web-site below) stated that he could make *2* ( yes, TWO) DVDS with the money he received from Kickstarter. I know it couldn't have taken much to make the promo videos up on youtube (which is what got everyone interested in the first place) and I'm fairly certain that's probably the same quality you will be receiving on the *SERIES OF DVDS* Along with the promoting his Cx5 business. So, was YOUR Money used to purchase equipment to make and manufacture his Cx5 wax ? As well as to purchase (instead of renting) expensive equipment for filming *FUTURE DVDS* ? In my opinion - I'd bet there are several DVDS already made ( for the future series -so Mr. Beane can take a vacation & still be collecting on what has already been paid for by YOU ! )
And since Mr.Beane said ( I quote) "everyone's opinion is valid"... So, in my opinion I personally would not do business nor would I ever encourage anyone else to after this charade of complete BULL SH*T !!!
People, don't be fooled - everthing is NOT as it appears - but, YOU be the judge !
A 50k production !! Yeah Right ~ LMAO ! ( The interest incurred on Mr.Beane USING MY MONEY FOR SO LONG GIVES ME THE RIGHT TO POST MY OPINION - JUST SO YOU KNOW I DIDN'T GET THAT BACK - I have Loads more to say - but, I don't want to make Mr.Bean ANGRY.
      @ Chalet - Bravo !!!
This is my opinion only - in no way meant to start a *LYNCH MOB* ( As I was accused of.)
Oh, one more thing. Mr.Beane in the beginning stated - that he was producing small amounts of his wax Cx5 for his own personal use - Now, if he had the means to produce enough for commissions etc... then WHY could he not fulfill the amount of wax to backers ( which at the time was only a small amount - add it up for yourself in the rewards = 181 samples before he gave out bonuses for having patience ! LOL...) If he had wrapped just *1* sample a day (365 days in a year & counting !) & went & got *23* tee shirts & just inked in "Cx5" ... Maybe, just maybe he would have had "BETTER KARMA"... ( my opinion again, I don't think he believes in KARMA ! )
      My opinion one last time,
As for a 50K DVD... ? hahahaha ~ ( What's that old song ??? "Go on take the _____ & ___ !!!! or vacation ,or set up my business for a steady income & a series of ready made DVDS !!! )

This is a space for making comments about the project and asking me questions. I try to address any concerns you or others have with the timeline of the project here. Please do not direct disparaging comments directed towards other backers - everyone's opinion is valid, and you each are partially right about what the process has been like.

      Graeme,
Your perspective is pretty spot on. This project had to happen along with the scheduled commissions that fuel my business. As a self employed person it was indeed very difficult in this economy to take as much time as this video demanded and maintain my business, and it turned out to be a year's worth of effort.

      Everyone,
All in all, I appreciate everyone's comments about the project and how they feel about the process. I encourage any of you to ask questions or bring up concerns directly with me. I hate to have to ask, but please be nice to each other.

"Everyone who's done a little complaining over the months - for gods sake, this was about setting up a company in the worst economy for decades."

Ha! What a ridiculous comment. The Kickstarter was to fund an instructional DVD that was originally planned to release around this time last year - an entire year has gone by. Between that and now, several release dates were given and missed with the end never seeming any closer. To me then, anyone who had concerns/complaints (which included myself at one time) was perfectly right to give them. Just because a Kickstarter is funded doesn't mean it's absolutely going to succeed.

This is not say nothing against Beane or how things have gone, just your nonsensical/unhelpful comment. For God's sake yourself, Graeme...

      Hi Chalet,
I definitely understand wanting more transparency, and I hope we've done a better job in the past few months at keeping you all up to date. The good news is the video will be shipped out to be printed next week, and the project is quickly coming to a close. I want to address your concern about the Kickstarter funds - the money raised on Kickstarter definitely went to shooting, editing, and now manufacturing the DVDs. In fact, even additional funds were raised outside of Kickstarter as the budget for the video grew. All of you Kickstarter contributors will be the first to receive samples of Cx5, though it is a separate aspect of Adam Beane Industries that hasn't been part of a Kickstarter project. I hope this clears things up! The video has been an epic project, as you will soon see.
      Cheers,

So, having read the comments and Adam's responses here, am I the only one who's getting the feeling that what we all actually paid for wasn't Adam's video, so much as it was Adam funding the manufacturing of Cx5? Not to be rude, and not to say I'm not eager to get ahold of the DVD, but Adam got almost twice what he 'needed' to make the video, then he just filmed himself making a sculpture he was privately commissioned to do (and of course I understand he had to tutorialize it) for who knows what sum of money. So on top of double for the film, he was also paid for his time working on the subject of the DVD independently of our funds. Now, almost every comment being answered that focuses on bringing up the point that most of us actually aren't interested in the Cx5 but are -very- interested in the DVD, have been met with Adam very excitedly telling the commenter about how great Cx5 will be, and how important it is for us to have to use his DVD.... So my question is, if the only thing we funded here was the DVD, which he couldn't fund himself, how has he been able to mass produce Cx5 without a separate Kickstarter for the funds to launch that?

I'm just really feeling uncomfortable with what I think is a massive lack of transparency in the process, from beginning to a year later now.

To Martin and everyone wondering about the additional footage of the celeb sculpture that's part of the DVD, it's true I can't show that stuff off just yet!

But the actual reason why you don't have your DVDs is that they're just not finished.

Filming and editing the video has changed shapes a lot in the past few months, and additional footage aside, the video as a whole is not ready for it's debut. So, thankfully, I'm not waiting on a go-ahead from said-celeb to send them out to you.

This is my first video and I've been learning a lot about how to present the information in a way that makes sense, how to get good shots, good lighting, good sound and so on. This is not so easy as one might imagine. I don't have a film crew- it is just myself and Alexis, so setting up every shot is a painstaking process.

I'd love to show you all what I've been working on, additional footage and all, and that's the bit I'm holding off on for now.

In addition to filming and editing we are of course getting all the Cx5 samples ready, and dealing with all the printing / packaging. Here too we have hit some production snags. I of course knew this would not be an easy task to pull off while also shooting a video, but I am moving them both along with every ounce of energy I have. I could list all of the other things I have had to do to keep my business running in these past few months, but I'm sure most of you can imagine.

Thank you all for caring enough about this project to get frustrated with me… It is taking longer than I wanted, but you're going to love the end result.

      Cheers!
      Adam

I am sure that this will not be popular, but hey...I am not sure of how much business
experience Mr Adam Beane has.....So please don't take this to heart people. Or indeed
      You Mr Beane.

      Playing devil's advocate.

It would seem that some of us ( Your Backer's ) are quite rightly getting restless.
There have been feature films that have been completed in a shorter time frame.

Whilst i fully understand that you wish to include the footage of the said celebrity on your DVD.
Would it not have been in yours, and your backer's interest to have consulted them.

Don't get me wrong, it is your project. Your future. But you should never forget the people who are picking up the tab.
Having taken the decision to delay things, to get the footage that you wanted. You should
have insisted on a release date for the footage.

I am lucky enough to have heavily invested in many large projects in the past. Some successful some not.

Putting my Enthusiast's hat on, (Which i believe that most of us backers on this project are.)
I am simply asking, why am i having to wait for some celeb to tell me when i can see the DVD ? That i invested in some 7 months ago. Did he or she invest ??....I doubt it.

      Putting my investors head on.
I would not be happy that i was not consulted on a decision, that would possibly delay my
investment. Before the decision was taken.
I would be questioning the sincerity of the deal. And that would more than likely result in me pulling the plug on my investment.

All that said....I am sure that it will be worth the wait.....

Earthquakes suck, and blow, and than suck some more. Best things in life are worth waiting for, except fresh air and YOUR FRIGGIN DVD. Wrap it up bro,... Just kidding, don't sweat it man.

Thanks, Adam. That answered my question perfectly. I'm sure you will cover all of this in your video, that one question had been pestering me. Thanks again!

The beauty of Cx5 is that it's not a permanent material, it can always be reworked, but is hard as plastic at room temperature. It will never dry out, and it won't sag over time unless it is in a very, very hot place. It is a premium sculpting material, and like most sculpting materials must be molded and cast in something else (bronze, plastic, etc.) Although it is light and strong (totally self supporting, and washable under tap water!), it is not what I would consider a durable material for permanent use. You can paint it, it takes lacquer primer beautifully. The upcoming video will give you all the information about Cx5 and other common finish materials. I hope this helps!
