Update - June 21
Lots of head-scratching work here at the shop - after much deliberation, and cross researching every option, we ordered the 2,000 dollars worth of trailer parts (axles, springs, wheels, and a hitch), and the 1,500 dollars worth of steel. That, plus the 400 dollar pickup rearend from the junkyard, and we've got the core of the carousel. We're burning through our party-money pretty fast - we're counting on y'all and Kickstartah to help us get the thing tricked out - sound gear, lights, generator, all the goodies, the party. We wanna bring it to you!
But we've got the core covered, it's gonna be an 11,000 pound hunkajunk - as part of the finalization of the design, there's been lots of figuring into weights, distribution, cog, etc., making sure the GCVW is within the capacity of our darling Dodge 3500 dually-beast, and we're lookin good. The numbers add up OK.
The load will mostly be carried on the trailer axles - there's a 5200 lb and a 6000 lb axle to share the load, and they're sprung together in a tandem-axle configuration. Then, to help with some of the load, but mostly to apply motive force, is a pickup truck rearend on airbags. The airbags allow us to vary the load on the axle, up to its rated 3800 lb, to get traction, etc., without getting involved in the complex dynamics of a triple-axle-spring arrangement under drive torque, or overloading the pickup rearend. Etc. So much thinking goes into this! So the drive-axle has turned into this super-cool ladderbar crosslink airbag system. Totally butch and adjustable. Key ingredients, butchness and adjustability. And it reuses a bunch of parts from the original carousel, all the better.
It's kind of impressive how little the scrap pile is growing. This new version is only a few feet narrower, and only slightly less long than the original. It should be able to fit a hundred people. That will be GOOD TIMES.
Also, I've spent a ton more design hours finding all the details that need to be figured out - the complexity of the drawing grows daily. Each set of decisions builds a tree of constraints, which end in a little bracket between two steel tubes. It's like ironing a shirt - pushing out the wrinkles, trying to not press any wrinkles in from beneath... chasing it back and forth, finding all the little wrinkles where things come together and smoothing them out.
At this point, though, all the design decisions have been made. It's just a matter of the details, the myriad details.
We're also building a friend a burn-horse, ordered prior to the kickstarter campaign, which we've mocked up. His support of the project is much appreciated, and we'd love to build more!
It's going to be pretty cool. The horse will be new - the picture shows a nice rusty one, but he belongs to the carousel. The firepit is an old semi-truck rim, with some cool feet from the original burn-horse. Sharing the love. It's going to be awesome. The horse cantilevers out over the fire, or will. Stay tuned.
