About this project

“The result is a wash: rather than making America more Christian, the mega churches have simply succeeded in making Christianity more American”
- Jesus, CEO, The Economist, December 2005

"Eleven Mega Churches" is a Documentary photo-based project begun in 2009 by artist Travis Shaffer. Shaffer is currently seeking to fund the publication of an artist's book of the same title to be self published in a limited edition of 1000, and cover crating and shipping costs for a solo exhibition of prints @ Texas Tech University's SRO - Photo Gallery.

Shaffer has exhibited images from this series at The Print Center in Philadelphia, PA; The 930 Art Center in Louisville, KY; 18 Rabbit Gallery in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Two prints from this series will be included in KUMU Art Museum's 15th Annual Print Triennial in Tallinn, Estonia

"Eleven Mega Churches" calls into question issues of access and diversity; land-use, suburban infrastructure, the automobile, and it’s environmental impact; and the formation of isolated communal brands. It seeks to coax its audience into open dialogue about the impact of the church as a building and an institution upon our world, along with differences between its implied and actual purposes and responsibilities. As one views these works, created using appropriated satellite imagery, there is an obvious repetition of sprawling parking lots, coupled with cul-de-sac laden homogenous housing developments and swimming pools, all icons of a distinctly American and more distinctly middle class ex-urban/suburban landscape.
