I hope this finds you very well.
I spent my commute today listening to the rough mixes of my new songs, and I have to tell you..I'm very excited! Wil and Jon recorded guitars at Right Angle in early May. I stopped in for an hour or so, but couldn't understand most of what they were talking about ("guitar talk?"). Nor could I understand where various fabulous looking guitars and amps kept appearing from. But it was sounding terrific, so I left them to it.
I was late for my vocal session last Saturday (due to going the wrong way on the 1 train. Hello? How long have I lived in this city?!), and Jon said that for every minute I was late, a new metal guitar part would be added to the album. Haha, I said, but upon hearing the song "I Never," he may not have been joking! My love of the Smashing Pumpkins song "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" had had a little rebirth while I was writing "I Never," so it's perhaps fitting.
And though we started a bit late, I finished all of my vocals last Saturday! It was such fun to be shut up in a room with nothing but my voice and my songs (and a microphone, and Wil and Jon in my headphones giving me tips). My favorite tip from Wil was that I ought to sneer while singing "The Gunfighter Meets His Match." I love playing the piano, but it really is a treat to sometimes just focus on singing.
The next step is background vocals and other tasty bits (glockenspiel? whistles? who knows?). Thanks to you, we are getting very close!
I just wanted to share the latest recording news!
Last week, JP and Wil got together in Queens and recorded some of JP's keyboard parts. I'm pretty excited about the results. I don't know how JP gets his keyboard to make those sounds, but I know I like them!
On Sunday, I had the pleasure of recording on a real piano at Acme in Mamaroneck, NY with Wil and Jon. We used the same lovely Steinway on my 2008 record "In a Pretty Box," so it was like working with an old friend! We also recorded two songs ("I Never" and "Nobody's Watching") on the Rhodes.
Next up is finishing JP's keyboards, and Wil's guitar. Both will happen next week. I can't wait for you to hear them!
Thanks to all of you, we reached our Kickstarter goal at noon yesterday! The support I received from each and every one of you means so very much. It will encourage and inspire me throughout the rest of the album-making process. It is so wonderful to know that 62 people are behind me, and I believe that will influence the final product in a unique and special way.
In recording news, the next step is recording the piano. So, that means I actually have to work rather than sitting on a throne in the studio and issuing thumbs ups or downs while eating Easter candy! We will be recording at Acme in Mamaroneck, NY one week from today. I am extra excited about this, because the Acme piano is an old friend of mine...we recorded all of the piano for "In a Pretty Box" there four years ago.
That reminds me, I should really go practice those piano parts. But thanks again so much, and I hope you have a wonderful Sunday!
