About this project

In March, Your Mother Dances waited with baited breath as we watched the Minnesota Fringe Festival lottery being drawn and we exhaled when YMD made it in to one of 20 coveted slots! Since our 2006 Milwaukee debut, YMD has been hoping we could take our proverbial act on the road especially to a city as vibrant and arts-friendly as Minneapolis. And now, in the Fringe's supportive and edgy atmosphere, we intend to present "In a Black Mood," a concert representative of our range and repertoire.

Who: Eight fabulous YMD dancers: Kelly Anderson, Paula Biasi, Sarah Bromann, Beth Engel, Steven Moses, Jaimi Patterson, Christal Wagner, and Megs Zintek. One Stage Manager: Simon Eichinger. And one overly responsible but entirely enthusiastic Artistic Director.
What: World Premiere of Elizabeth Johnson's new "Burn Into the Wick" to classic Heart songs, the Minneapolis premiere of "Yearnin'" to Neko Case selections, Sara Hook's "Beau Geste" to Mozart (and Johnson's premature obituary), and Luc Vanier's "Triptych" with an original score by Christopher Burns
When: August 5 (5:30 PM), 7 (5:30 PM), 8 (4 PM), 9 (8:30 PM), & 11 (7 PM)
Where: The beautiful, historic Southern Theatre in downtown Minneapolis, 1420 Washington Avenue S

The Plan: Any and all funds donated to YMD will go towards the transportation, accommodations, and meals for our "crew" and all are tax deductible through Bad Soviet Habits.

Our work in Milwaukee has always been self-produced which means all ticket proceeds have gone to pay space rental, technical staff, and the dancers a small wage with what's left supported by small private audience donations. All other costs come at our personal sacrifice.

The good news: In this case, for a small fee, a beautiful space and technical staff are provided!

The not so good news: All of us are losing paid days at jobs to travel and perform for nine days. We can not all spend our own money to go plus lose wages without a guarantee that ticket sales will be able to reimburse us. Part of our expenses will be printing and distributing promotional materials encouraging audiences to check out our show. The more people we get in, the better chance we have to recoup some costs. This is how these Fringe things work.

If we MEET our goal, though we still may incur personal losses, we will ALL BE ABLE TO GO and take advantage of this exciting opportunity and environment. If we EXCEED our goal, we can make small steps to recouping lost wages and not lose our shirts! Without greater support, we are all incurring debts that will take us extra jobs, shifts, overtime, and more of the general blood, sweat, and tears dance artists accept as part of our daily juggle.

For your time and support, we have some goodies and rewards planned and will update you regularly on our web site www.yourmotherdances.com under my blog link "Mom's Rant." While you are there, check out our mission and artistic statements links to read more about what we passionately believe about dance and the company.

To get a feel for the Festival and the range of performances from August 5-15, go to The Fringe's web site: http://www.fringefestival.org/. Enjoy and maybe we'll even see you there!

Connected as Elizabeth Johnson (543 friends)

Your Mother Dances features the work of choreographer and founder Elizabeth Johnson as well as other prominent and emerging choreographers (Heinz Poll, David Parker, Sara Hook, Molly Rabinowitz, Erika Randall, Anna Sapozhnikov, Kelly Anderson, Monica Rodero, and Dan Schuchart among others). We wink at and defy clichéd and hierarchical stereotypes, particularly of dancers and women in all professional, social, and cultural spheres. The company name says it all: ironic “your mama” humor is juxtaposed with the potent reality that women dance artists are in fact hard working professionals and parents creatively and successfully juggling sometimes conflicting roles. Our alternative, innovative and creative approaches to our jobs and life in general make us vital contributors to our communities.

With the awareness of our intrinsic value, Your Mother Dances is committed to presenting potent, vivid, theatrical, and virtuosic dance works reflective of our seemingly irreconcilable characters. Our mission is to amplify marginalized voices by making work that reflects our multifaceted experiences. The dilemmas presented by the many hats we wear are reflected in dances that are satisfyingly physical and cerebral, intricate yet accessible, frank without self-righteousness, tragically funny, and ultimately reflective of our common efforts to somehow transcend the impossible expectations of modern life. Your Mother Dances, is committed to artistic integrity and dance art that engages rigorous embodied physicality, depth of thought, and relevant social dialogue and community involvement.
