Update #9: CDs are in + Release party Saturday in SF!

Posted on October 5, 2011

Greetings dear friends,

Its a happy day for us here in Shants-ville. We've just received a great big box of CDs, and soon they'll be on their way to YOU!

Once again, we couldn't have done this without your support. High fives all around!

BAY AREA FOLKS: We're celebrating in fine form this Saturday night, Oct 8 in San Francisco, with an album release party at Viracocha, at 998 Valencia (at 21st). We're performing the whole record, and there'll be guest performances by Quinn DeVeauxBrianna Lea PruettRachel Toups + a few other surprises. Kicks off at 8pm. Planning on coming by? Drop us a line (either on Facebook or to theshants@gmail.com) so we can have your award package waiting for you! You can RSVP here: Facebook event

Once you get your copy, you may notice we've thanked ya'll in the liner notes... aren't you fancy!

A little icing on the cake... Beautiful was the Night has already started to drum up a little buzz in various blogs & rags. Here's what they're saying:

"Stream The Shants new album: Beautiful was the Night..." The Bay Bridged

"With their full length debut, Beautiful was the Night, set for release September 27, the band is about to garner more praise. The album maintains the haunting, meandering sound from the EP that made me want to root for The Shants, but tracks like “Brother” and the closer “(I’m Not) Gonna Waste Another Song on You” reveal a brass swagger." - SF Station

"Stompy bayou music!" - CD Baby, Music Discovery Podcast

"Fantastic. A first-rate tribute to the state of Louisiana." - Rebel Rod, KGSR, Austin

"Paints a beautiful picture of Louisiana. Beautiful was the Night offers subtle music with a touch of country and folk, in which Sam Tokheim excels at a lonely-sounding pedal steel guitar. Gritty, unconstrained... with a sharp, dark edge & burning guitar riffs, this record is perfect for an Indian summer." - Alt-Country Forum (Netherlands)

We hope you all have a pleasant weekend, and look for those award packages in the mail next week!!!

Best,

Skip, Sam, Carver & Adam
The Shants

Update #6: The Home Stretch!

Posted on June 10, 2011

Howdy folks!

Taking a moment from our mixing sessions to drop ya'll an update. We're in the home stretch! We apologize for the relative radio silence and delay in getting your rewards out to ya. Lots of Life Stuff going on: Skip is gettin' hitched, Adam's solar business is taking off, Sam got a new job, etc. but also our trusty engineer Eliot had to relocate his studio, which set us back a bit. We are now wrapping up overdubs and mixing at a new shop: Tones on Tail in East Oakland!

Still, we are happy to report that 90% of tracking is finished, and 50% of the album is mixed and ready for mastering! We're starting to play with the song order and stuff... Beautiful Was The Night is already shaping up to be an unforgettable audio experience.

We are shooting for a mid-September record release event, likely in San Francisco, but possibly in other towns as well: Sacramento & LA, namely. Being one of our lovely backers, you will be getting the album much earlier: digital downloads will be available by the end of July! Woo ha!

Stay thirsty friends, and thank you for your continued support!

The Shants’ slow-burning sound originates from the rural backgrounds of its members: from South Louisiana delta pines, to the brusk plains of Minnesota to the rolling hills of the Central California Coast. The Shants now call Oakland, California home. They have one EP released through High Scores & Records in Portland.

"Hailing from Oakland, California, The Shants specialize in a blend of Southern folk and country, embossed with the sad sounds of the pedal steel guitar” - FILTER Magazine

“…Rustic and subdued, like the scant, heavily muted light that finds its way to the floor of a redwood grove - No Depression

“The Shants play sunny-yet boreal folk songs that are tinged with blues and nostalgia. Their melodies sound like they’ve been soaked in a Louisiana bayou and left out to dry in the California sun, and have a cadence that’s murky and forbidding… yet palatable and serene.” - Kevin Wan
