On Tuesday, the horns came out to play. A little run down on who's who here:
On trumpet is Mark Braud, on trombone is Lucien Barbarin, and on sax is Clint Maedgen. All three play and tour regularly with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Mark Braud, the new bandleader for Preservation Hall, has trumpet in his blood. His grandfather, John Brunious, Sr. was a famous New Orleans trumpeter. His uncles, John Brunious, Jr. and Wendell Brunious are also both renowned trumpeters. Mark plays with the best of them, including being part of Harry Connick, Jr's big band since 2001.
Lucien Barbarin is also part of a family legacy of New Orleans music. His great-uncle, Paul Barbarin, used to play with King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, and wrote the hit song "Bourbon Street Parade" (Pres Hall performing "Bourbon St. Parade" at jazzfest: http://www.youtube.com/watch... ). Lucien is another long time member of Harry's big band, and has also played with Winton Marsalis, Dr. Michael White, and Nicholas Payton. Here's Lu playing with Harry: http://www.youtube.com/watch...
NOTE: there are lots of youtube clips of different people playing "Bourbon Street Parade", but as I was digging though I chose to link to this one because of the incredibly attractive guy in sunglasses seen dancing in the audience about 54 seconds in. Also, you can see Mark leading the PH band in this one. For a version with lyrics, check out Leroy Jones singing with Harry's band here: http://www.youtube.com/watch...
Clint Maedgen is best known as the front man for local favorite The New Orleans Bingo! Show. While he plays sax sparingly with Bingo, in recent years he's been brought on as a touring member of Preservation Hall playing that beautiful white-lacquered tenor. Here's clint ripping on sax with Bingo at Snug Harbor last Halloween: http://www.youtube.com/watch...
If anybody's really enjoying the youtube links, check out this one of the PH band featuring Clint singing, Lucien on trombone, and U2's The Edge playing U2's "Vertigo" @ the post-katrina re-opening of Preservation Hall: http://www.youtube.com/watch...
The session went well. We put horn parts on 6 tunes, and were in and out in 3 hours. We used a couple of 1950s RCA ribbon mics, and everything came out sounding really sweet.
A big thank you once again to Angela ( http://belowthesun.com/ ) for the photos.
I'm getting excited... I've almost recorded all the live parts. Vocalists coming soon!
AUDIO FOR YOU:
The track "Drinking Alone" now has all of the parts recorded. It still needs editing and mixing, but it's finally got all of the elements. I put the entire track up here for your listening pleasure.
Also, after that I uploaded a clip of "What It Was" with the horns, just to give another taste of what went on at Tuesday's session.
P.S. - Don't be shy. Leave comments! I love hearing what you have to say.

I sculpt data that scrambles electrons that excite magnets that move speakers that ripple the air that tickles your eardrum that tantalizes your brain that shakes your bum. Simply put, I'm a music producer and recording engineer. I do a lot of work with some of New Orleans' favorite acts, including Preservation Hall & the New Orleans Bingo! show.
Among the more famous artists I've recorded are Tom Waits, Pete Seeger, Del McCoury, Lenny Kravitz, Jim James, Paolo Nutini, Mos Def, and Buddy Miller. I've also done independent recordings for local greats like Shannon Powell, Tom McDermott, Luke Winslow-King, Meschiya Lake, & Kristin Diable.
In addition to my studio engineering, I produce and perform electronic music as The Madd Wikkid, and have been known to play piano/keyboards around New Orleans and Japan. I also sometimes tour as a live sound engineer.
LOVE. Luuuuuuuuuuuuv it! It's so innovative and yet has that New Orleans sound. Dig the horns, reminds me of The Crusaders. We need to have a big party when it's all done--play all the songs from this album and more from the other artists/ NO jazz/whatever else. Invite everyone who played on the album and all us backers and our friends and yo mamma. Y'all wanna?? I'll be on the Party Organizing committee!! Great job, Earl--go man...
Janet, you've already disclosed your ulterior motives - you mentioned at the gumbo party that you're looking for an excuse to rent that classy joint on St. Charles again where Bonnie's wedding party was. :)
I'm definitely going to have a release party of some sort. I don't want to put the cart before the horse, though. Let me finish this thing before I start any other projects.
Anyway, I'm glad you're loving it. It's coming along well. I can't wait till it's done!
Truly top-notch stuff, Earl. And I'll try my best to make it over to NOLA when you do have that CD release party. :-)
Keep up the solid work, man. You're clearly a pro and collaborating with musical greatness. I anticipate this album making quite the splash.
