Why Film?
I know a couple of guys in town with RED One cameras, and they make pretty great looking films with them. I'm sure either one of them would partner with me on this film. Why haven't I asked them? Well, one, I already have a great relationship with DP Sam Naiman. But, just as importantly, I've decided I want to shoot this on actual film. I've worked with Super-8 in the past (as recently as March as part of shooting my brother's wedding), and took a class on 16mm Cinematography where I participated in a group project shot on 16mm film. I loved the texture and mood that filmstock added to the project.
Oh, but, Amy, haven't you seen those 35mm adapters for video cameras? They make your footage look like film! Or, how about the new DSLRs that shoot video?
Yes. Yes I have. I own two 35mm adapters (one for the DVX and one for the HPX170), and used them on four of my previous shorts (Girl vs. Boy, Four, Picture, and Stay Sharp). And I am currently editing a short for a friend that was shot with both a DSLR and an HD camera with an adapter - the footage looks great.
But it isn't FILM.
When I see this movie in my head, I see it with all the nuances and imperfections of film. The extended light capturing availability of today's modern film stocks is unattainable with most HD cameras (the RED One comes close). There is nothing wrong with video, it's a great medium, and one I will continue to work in. But, for this movie, I want the aesthetic of actual, hold-it-in-your-hands film.
So, that, my dear Kickstarter Backers and interested browsers, is why I'm looking to raise funds. I have the camera - a nice Eclair NPR I got for a steal off eBay - so there's no rental expense. I just need to buy the film then get it processed and transferred, which is a hard cost I can't really barter my way around.
Thanks for your support. Please spread the word if you haven't already done so. For those who have been Facebooking and emailing the link, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
