A documentary featuring men & women striving for gender equality in Kenya & its positive effects within their family & community.

IN THE NEST is a documentary film that is currently in production.  Gender equality is imperative for a nation to be profitable and sustainable.  At The Nest - a home in Kenya for children  whose mothers are in prison - we see first hand the effects of gender equality when a community comes together for a greater good.  The Nest is a prime example of having male allies who are eager to be included and educated on the significant impact they can have on obtaining gender equality.  Their support gives women a song to sing and children wings to soar into a more positive future. Please donate to help us make this film and spread the word. Help us tell the story of The Nest and the people involved who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of the women and children who reside there.

HOW THE MONEY WILL BE SPENT

The $75,000 we are raising for this Kickstarter campaign is a portion of our production budget, and an even smaller part of the total budget for the film.  Your donation will allow us to make our second trip to The Nest in Kenya in early 2012 to continue filming the remainder of these amazing stories.

Here are some things your contributions will help cover:

- paying the local Kenya crew (we are working with Hot Sun Films and Foundation....a truly inspirational story as well http://www.hotsunfoundation.org/)

- renting lighting and sound package for a 3-week production shoot

- hiring an editor, colorist and professional sound mixer

- the extremely talented composer, Zain Effendi, is creating an original musical score for IN THE NEST - that is his music on our Kickstarter video

- finishing + transfer costs so we can distribute theatrically

- paying ourselves a stipend to cover our rent (and maybe even food...oh, documentary!)

- We have also included in the budget a significant donation that will go directly to The Nest.

Throughout the production, we’ll maintain a project blog about the film’s progress and post plenty of photos and bonus videos. (Check out the ones from our previous trip here: http://inthenest.dipdive.com/blog/)

It costs a lot to make a film and we are certainly allowed to surpass our Kickstarter goal!  Every dollar donated to this project is an investment in developing gender equality not only in Kenya but globally!

TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION

Your donation is tax deductible.  IN THE NEST is a fiscally sponsored project of Creative Visions Foundation, a 501(c)3 - this means they lend us their non-profit status. Inspired by the life of Dan Eldon, a young Reuters photojournalist killed in Somalia in 1993, Creative Visions Foundation supports "Creative Activists," individuals who use the power of media and the arts to create positive change in the world.  Contributions on behalf of IN THE NEST are payable to Creative Visions Foundation and are tax deductible less the value of any goods or services received, as allowed by law.

HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS

Kickstarter is a tool for anyone in the creative world to gather the help and support needed for their projects. Kickstarter’s platform allows filmmakers like us to share our project with the unlimited Internet community. We create a profile, set a fundraising goal and a time frame to meet it, and offer the rewards/incentives.

However, Kickstarter is an ALL OR NOTHING proposition. That means we NEED to meet our goal of $75,000. If we raise even a dollar short of our goal, we lose it all. All of your donations will be fully refunded. We really don't want this to happen!

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO HELP?

After donating, the next most important thing you can do is announce our campaign to the world. Share our trailer, link to our Kickstarter campaign and website on your Facebook profile and Twitter feed for all friends and family to see. We ask you in this time of giving to help support a story of inspiration that can give back to the community.

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE AN EVEN BIGGER IMPACT!

We would be honored to have your support in such a large way. We are offering Executive Producer credits at $25,000 each. Your name would appear in our credits and on IMDB as such. Please note that these are honorary titles and do not engender any creative or business involvement/decision-making in regards to any part of IN THE NEST nor does the credit entitle any claim of ownership over IN THE NEST. These donations are tax-deductible (please contact us at amanda@moiraimedia.com for more details).

MORE INFO ABOUT THE FILM

IN THE NEST is an intimate character portrait of men and women striving for gender equality in Kenya and its positive effects within their family and community.

Gender injustice has a direct impact on children.  The status of women is directly related to the well being of children, and therefore children's advocates must dig deeper to realize the real issue of gender inequality.

The film's backdrop is The Nest, a unique home in Limuru, Kenya dedicated to the care and safety of children with imprisoned mothers.  They also rehabilitate recently released female inmates and reintegrate them with their children and society at large.

We will be following three different characters and their stories:

1 - Peter, one of the founders of The Nest, and his passion and perseverance to help these women and children.  Not many know of his past but they do know that nothing stands in his way when it comes to helping women and children.

2 - Veronica was in prison for killing her rapist.  She was released at the age of 22 and now The Nest is reintegrating her back into her village and giving her job training skills at beauty school.  Her father's side of the family is the only family that takes her in.

3- Esther was recently released from prison and reunited with her three year old boy.  Esther had a domestic dispute with her husband and she fled, leaving behind her little boy with the husband.  The husband called the police and reported Esther for child abandonment.  When Esther was brought back home, her husband unleashed his anger on her setting her on fire.  After she recovered in the hospital, she was sentenced to five years for child neglect and abandonment.

4 - Judy was arrested for stealing.  She claims she was wrongly imprisoned and to this day clings to her innocence.  She was recently released and reunited with her daughter Veronica who entered school for the first time in the fall 2011.  However, growing increasingly impatient and focused only on making money, she fled The Nest in the middle of the night and was recently found staying at her friend's house who works as a prostitute.

All of these stores are interwoven with one common theme...The Nest.  Can one organization make a difference?  When you have male allies, does it help in sustaining gender equality?  With strong male figures present who champion gender equality, will it encourage children to thrive better in society?  How can gender equality directly impact a developing nation?

We are eternally grateful for all of your help and support!
