We’re reeling with excitement and gratitude for the amazing show of support that we’re receiving in our effort to bring this story to the screen.

A community of supporters have come together to help us achieve our goal of filming a quality short film; pre-production is in full swing!

In the midst of producing the short, we are continuing our campaign to raise awareness about the novel LEAVING ATLANTA and garner the support needed to make the full-length feature film a reality.

With over $10,000 so far, we continue to press on and have set a NEW GOAL - $20,000, but it's our intent to raise as much as we can before we meet with potential financiers who can "match" funds.

SYNOPSIS: Award winning novelist Tayari Jones delivers a vividly disturbing, but hopeful novel that recounts one of the darkest tragedies in American history - through the eyes of three unforgettable children. Based on the Atlanta child murders of 1979-1981, this wrenching story is told from the perspective of three Atlanta fifth-graders living in the midst of the crisis. The film is a coming of age story, wrapped around true events. At the start of a new school year in 1979, we get to know three children and their families as the entire community deals with the initial reports that there is a child murderer in Atlanta. Tasha Baxter, Rodney Green, and Octavia Harrison will discover back-to-school means facing everyday challenges in a new world of safety lessons, terrified parents, and constant fear. When classmates begin disappearing and friends become headlines Tasha, Rodney and Octavia find ways to live with the fear or escape it. This is a moving story of their struggle to grow up – and survive. It captures all the hurts and wins, the all-too-sudden changes, and the merciless outside forces that can sweep the young into adulthood, and forever shape their lives. Leaving Atlanta confronts complicated and sensitive subjects with just the right amount of sorrow and promise.

OUR MISSION: Make an evocative film through beautiful cinematography and engaging storytelling. We are on the verge of seeing years of dedication and determination pay off. Your support can help make that happen. We are producing a short film based on our script to help showcase the project for potential studios, production companies, financiers, etc. that are interested in helping move it further to the big screen.

HOW YOUR DONATIONS WILL BE USED: Your contribution will go towards equipment rental, props, wardrobe, set dressing, editing, and other production expenses.

OUR GOAL: After exceeding our original goal, we are setting the bar even higher. Our NEW GOAL is $20,000! After all -

HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS: 
Your credit card is only charged, if and when, we reach our goal. If we do not reach our fundraising goal by the project's stated deadline, we lose ALL the money that has been raised. All "backer rewards" are only redeemable when the project reaches its fundraising goal. After that time, backers will be contacted by the project's producers to obtain any additional information that may be needed (ie. shipping address, etc.).
