About this project

The thing about artists is, if the people and project are right, they will work for less money than they should. With your help we can put a stop to that.

For the last year, Dancing Monkey Cabaret has created innovative, original variety shows with a fantastic group of artists willing to collaborate with us. We've done shows with themes about Love, Death, Politics, and Culture. We even did one show about Chairs, which managed to cover all of those things at once. The project has been a grand artistic success right from the start. The business side, of course, is taking a bit longer to take hold. In our first year, we sold nearly 50% of seating each weekend, and our audience return rate is very high, phenomenal results for an emerging theater company in such harsh economic times. At this point, ticket sales are covering rent, advertising, and the business side of things. We've managed to make it through one of the worst slumps for Atlanta theaters in years. Our little company emerged when several established companies closed their doors after years of production. And we have no intention of stopping, in fact, we plan to produce 6 shows over the next twelve months! Our capitol for the creation of the shows themselves, however, has run dry.

The money generated here on Kickstarter will be used to commission new scripts from playwrights, music for the band, performers, and variety guest artists. This financial cushion will allow us the time we need for our audience to continue to grow to a sustainable base, while existing ticket sales will be used for the operation of the company throughout. We've set our goal high, but when achieved it will be enough to create and produce all six shows! Your funding will allow a talented group of artists to earn the money they deserve for the amount of work they put into these shows.

So, What kind of shows are we creating?
A Dancing Monkey show can be compared to many different things, but is truly unique. Each show is a themed collection of a variety of acts. There's always live music and singers, after that things are pretty variable. Some comedic and dramatic theater, sketches, dances, and puppetry have become staples. But our guest acts have been magicians, clowns, films, aerial artists, and even a choreographed Segway Scooter dance troupe. Upcoming show themes include Hollywood, Dreams, Geeks and Halloween.

Connected as Aaron Gotlieb

Hi there!

I'm Aaron Gotlieb, co-creator of Dancing Monkey Cabaret!

I'm a puppeteer, an actor and theater technician in the Atlanta/Decatur area. A few years ago, I was in a creative slump. As an actor, you recreate other people's work. That's not to say there's nothing creative in the effort, but you are using someone's dialogue, someone's direction, etc. I wanted to add to the collection, rather than only work inside what already existed. Around that time a friend of mine, Geoffrey Brown, invited me to join him on a mad cap plan to recreate Vaudeville in the modern age.

Now, we create new shows every other month! It has been one of the hardest, most amazing, frustrating, exciting, terrifying and satisfying things I have ever done! I think Geoffrey would agree, except he just became a father, so it's probably more of a 'close second' for him.
