About this project
Share the dream of WAVES, a non-profit surf voluntourism program in Lobitos, Peru. As surfers, we saw amazing waves. As people from all over the world with a sense of social justice, we wanted to give back. The high cost of surfboards made it prohibitive for the locals of Lobitos to surf the world class waves. Digging deeper, we listened. Limited opportunities, poor education, and low self esteem spoke volumes.
We asked surfboard manufacturers for help - some surfboards for the local kids and our group of educated, international development experienced surfers would create programs to go with them. Global Surf Industries responded. Soon after, donated boards were on their way and together with the community we were creating an ongoing infrastructure for visiting surfers to get involved. We believe surf travel should benefit the people and communities where it happens. Enter WAVES.
In 2007, WAVES for development was legally formed in Peru with the mission of creating life-enriching experiences in coastal communities through Educational Surf programs that develop youth into healthy & empowered adults and Surf Voluntourism programs that engage travelers & transform their world views.
Now, WAVES wants to build a a film and photography program that will do just that. Jeremy Koons has offered to share his passion and expertise to foster creativity, build confidence and develop skills that will be useful in the lives of local youth and potentially even earn them some money. During a two-week stint this March in Peru, Jeremy will launch a film and photography program. He'll take us through the experience by shooting before, during and after. The awareness and publicity created with this film and project will enrich lives and transform them.
Building on the success of the pifworld campaign (http://www.pifworld.com/#/project/Pictureawaveofchange/59/overview) the money raised here will bring the best team together possible to launch the film, purchase additional equipment, and sustain the local program into the future.
PS Because of the amazing support the original goal has been surpassed - all additional funding will go toward establishing the Surf Film/Photography program for the next year
