1. What is the purpose of this road trip & documentary?

Our purpose is to provide an entertaining and practical example of living and traveling sustainably. To do this, we plan on reusing much of the waste we produce as a wealthy nation, and by trading creativity, effort, and community service for life’s basic essentials.

We intend to seek out new and exciting ways to have fun, all while connecting with communities across North America that share our passion for innovative, fun, and ecofriendly living.

Our goal is to continue the escalating cycle of inspiration, just as we have been inspired by other people and their projects, and we hope others will use our documentary as the catalyst to create and share adventures of their own.

2. What is the “Free Adventures Documentary” going to show?

The documentray will feature our adventures as we journey across North America. You will see footage from art, culture, and music festivals all over North America, and you can expect authentic and lively interviews with creative, innovative, and just plain "rad" people who express fresh ideas about service, sustainability, and enjoying life.

All this will be packaged into a story expressing the limitless potential of do-it-yourself and open-source culture.

3. How do you plan on traveling 15,000 miles while spending $0 on fuel, lodging, and food?

In the most simplest of explinations: we plan to convert the bus to run on vegetable oil. For something a bit more in depth, here is a breakdown:

2. Fuel. The bus will run on recycled vegetable oil that we have pre-arranged to pick up from restaurants chip factories during the trip. Our plan is to convert about half of the storage bay in our bus into a giant reserve fuel tank. This tank will allow us to store up to 1,250 gallons, which at a modest 6 mpg allows us travel 7,500 miles without needing to fuel up.

4. Lodging. We plan to make the bus our mobile living quarters, complete with bathroom, shower, kitchen, and hammocks. However, we also plan on utilizing the plethora of hospitable communities all around the country, staying with people who have offered their homes on websites like couchsurfing.org, helpexhange.net, and workaway.info. And of course we will also be staying with family and friends we meet along the way.

6. Food. There are a variety of ways we plan on spending $0 on food, but our main source of sustenance is serving the local communities, whether it be at soup kitchens, churches, or farms. It is our goal to trade our brawn and our creativity for our daily bread. But of course, we also plan on salvaging some of the nearly 50% of produced food that is thrown away in America, so we will be experimenting with some ideas pioneered by the freegan movement, and testing a few of our own creative solutions.

No! That is not our plan at all. We only to want to grow and contribute to the communities and individuals we visit, not steal or annoy them. Our solutions are designed to be practical and enjoyable ways of living and traveling sustainably. We want to share the message that anyone can use creativity, community service, and a little forethought to have amazing “free adventures”.

5. How can traveling 15,000 miles in a 6 mpg Bus be sustainable?

By responsibly reusing renewable resources. (Read on for more a in depth answer.) Living sustainably is an increasingly complex issue, and one we don’t pretend to have all the answers to. However, there are a variety of creative technologies we will be employing that will help minimize our footprint.:

2. One such device is the living roof that we are installing at the top of the bus. The roof is made up of living sod and serves several environmentally conscious functions. The grass acts as a filter between the emissions of the bus and our atmosphere. Basically because the veggie oil is an organic compound, it has none of the harmful elements that regular diesel has (benzene, sulfur dioxide, etc), thus we are able to send the emissions through the tail pipe and underneath the grass allowing the CO2 to be absorbed by the grass and plants before it enters the atmosphere.

4. Another use for the living roof is its ability to recycle grey water. That means that all excess water coming from the sink and shower will used to water the vegetation on our living roof. This ensures that we don’t waste water, and that our grey water doesn’t disturb any ecosystems.

6. Another piece of technology we will be incorporating is an atmospheric water generator. This device contantaly takes water from humidity in the air and purifies it for drinking. The AWG can produce up to 7 gallons a day and allows us to become nearly water independent and self-sufficient. Similarly, "Lifesaver Bottles"" allow us to take dirty unusable water and turn it into drinkable water.

8. Clean electricity will also be produced through our diesel generator run on vegetable oil. And to limit our use of even the clean electricity we will be utilizing as many energy-saving devices as possible. Essentially the bus will become our very own smart house that is contantly being changed to limit our footprint on the world.

NO! that is that exact opposite of our purpose. We plan to work for every meal, trading our brawn and creativity for our daily bread. We want share the fact that everyone is worth far more than the amount of money in their pockets.

Specifically we plan to do this by coordinating with hosts at work exchange sites like wwoof.org & helpexhange.net, who offer up room and board in exchange for work.
We also plan on volunteering at churches, as well as and music and art festivals.
& when none of those options are available we will have food reserves in the RV that have been “purchased” for free using coupons. http://www.youtube.com/watch...

7. Where are you stopping on the trip?

We plan to stop at art, culture, and music festivals as well as visiting creative communities and innovative people across North America. While we don’t have concrete dates for any stops yet, we are planning on stopping in many of the major cities across the United States and a few major cities in Canada. 8. How does this kickstarter.com thing work?

Basically your donation is a pledge and if we reach our $10,000 goal then amazon charges your account on or around March 10th, but if we dont reach our goal, the money is never collected, and their will be no “free adventures” for anyone. So please tell your friends and pitch in what you can.

Hello everyone!

We are very happy to bring you this special update! We weren't sure if it was going to be possible, but we got the "green light" from kickstarter yesterday, so we are ecstatic to put this portion of our project in place.

At the end of our journey, after everything is said and done, we plan to sell the bus and to give away the proceeds. While our first desire was to return the money to our backers, the kickstarter rules forbid "any kind of financial return". So we thought we would try the next best thing and let you decide what you want done with the money!

We recommend a few options, the first is putting your donation back into the kickstarter community. You can email us the link to whichever project you wish to support and then we will make a donation to that project according to the amount you originally donated. Or you can send us a message telling us what you want done with your money, like if you want it donated to a special charity, or if you want us to keep it to help support our future endeavors .
