The Mower Gang mows Detroit's abandoned parklands so that kids can play. This project will allow us to mow a free maze and a labyrinth on Nov. 6th.
The Detroit Mower Gang mows Detroit's abandoned parklands so that kids can play safely. This kickstarter project will allow us to mow a maze and a labyrinth in the tall grass of one of Detroit's public parks. The Mower Gang will provide the mowers and the manpower, your donation will give us a little bit of gas money as well as some funds to rent a chipper (to turn saplings into mulch), to make signs and other do-dads that will be needed to safely navigate visitors into and out of the maze and labyrinth.
The Maze and Labyrinth will be a temporary installation. We will mow it early in the day and open it up that same day. It will last until the grass regrows. It will be similar to a cornfield maze except it will just be mowed from tall grass. Also, it will be free of charge to all visitors.
The Cost Breakdown is as follows (we expect between 25-30 volunteers): Equipment Rental: Chipper/Shredder $100 Gasoline: $60 Churros or Doughnuts : $30 Coffee, Water, Generic-brand-Gatorade: $80 Trimmer Line: $12 2-stroke oil: $8 Wood and paint for signs: $100 Equipment repairs in case something breaks: $80 Lunch: $100 Reserve (in case I can't add or something goes wrong): $30 Total Amount Requested: $600
You might say that the Mower Gang creates something cool from the decaying remains of our city's unmowed parks, you might say it is environmentally friendly to use what the earth gives us. You might call us crazy or lazy. The Mower Gang just likes to mow things and mowing a maze is about as cool as it gets.
The Mower Gang will use our public relations contacts to attract kids and adults from around the Detroit area to visit our creation. We have a website (MowerGang.com, a Facebook page: Detroit Mower Gang, and we were recently profiled in the Detroit Free Press and on WDET, Detroit's NPR station. Hopefully, this project will cause a stir and get people to come out and get lost in our maze.

Sep 16, 2010 - Oct 16, 2010 (30 days)
Pledge $1 or more
All donors will be given priority entrance to the maze and labyrinth for themselves and their friends. Donors will be given honory gang membership and thus will be allowed in first.
Pledge $10 or more
A donation of $10 or more will get a personal e-mail with my favorite photographs from the Maze and Labyrinth event. These candid photos will show gang members working hard to create a fun event.
Pledge $50 or more
A donation of $50 or more will be sent a Mower Gang T-shirt. These self-printed shirts are usually reserved only for gang members after they have volunteered for two events, but in this case donors will be given one as a special exception. Shirts are available in a variety of sizes for men and women. They are a ringer-style shirt, gray with black rings at the arm and neck. The Mower Gang logo is a skull with crossed mower blades and it is printed on the front.
