A 13-part webseries taking an entertaining and informative look at unique ports of video games, hosted by a tall red-haired Brit.
(The un-censored version of the pilot, complete with gratuitous swearing, can be found here.)
PortsCenter is a web series that aims to take an entertaining and informative look at interesting and unique ports of video games - games that started life on one system, and then found themselves being re-released on another some time afterwards.
Video game ports are an often overlooked element of gaming culture, especially now when games are all designed with cross-platform released in mind from the beginning.
Occasionally, a port will differ from its source material in some way. It might be a change for the better, or it could ruin the game forever. Who knows? Well, we do, obviously, because its these games that PortsCenter will be looking at.
$4,200 allows us to produce a season of thirteen ten-minute episodes. The money buys us:
- Filming equipment,
- the games and the systems needed to play them, and
- the hardware to capture the video footage.
Most of the episodes will follow a similar template as the pilot, looking at a specific port of a specific game, with very brief looks at the original version and some other ports. A couple of episodes will look at groupings of games - one game across several platforms, say, or looking at a particular genre.
Being able to make the show would be exceptional. But there are things we'd love to be able to do as well that we can't do with just $4,200. We'd love to be able to up the production quality - buy a proper camera rather than a $250 handycam, improve the sound and lighting, that sort of thing.
One of the other things we'd love to do is a supplementary podcast for each episode - an interview with someone involved in developing the port in question, asking them about certain choices, how they feel about the end result, and get a little bit more in-depth and technical than the webseries itself.
If we're somehow able to raise as much as $7,000 we can up the production value and get the podcast rolling. Beyond that, who knows? Maybe we'd be able to make a few more episodes, knock the episode count up from 13 to as many as 20.
We have a number of snazzy rewards available, ranging from comedy production credits to signed copies of the first volume of Ben's scifi-comedy comic, Jump Leads.
But the reward we're most excited about is the exclusive NES cart artwork, or cartwork (clever wording, we know), designed and produced by the wonderful magicians at 72Pins.
Anyone who chooses a reward tier at the $100-or-higher level will receive this exclusive DOOM NES cart:
Praise for PortsCenter
"All in all, Portscenter is fast-paced, informative – from both a technical and historical point of view – and has a fun sensibility that reminded me a lot of all those BBC history docs with Terry Jones. In short, the show doesn’t suck and I hope they get to make more." - Dino Andrade, voice actor ("World of Warcraft", "Batman: Arkham Asylum", "Brütal Legend")
"GamesWipe for people who know [their stuff] about games." - Oli Smith, writer of videogames and books ("Doctor Who: Evacuation Earth", "Doctor Who: Nuclear Time", "LittleBigPlanet Ultimate Official Handbook")
"...if the pilot episode is any indication then the series looks to be both entertaining and informative... if you like seeing fresh video game content on the web then this is a good endeavor to support." - SideQuesting.com
"we love it... a shameless rip off of [Charlie Brooker's ScreenWipe] but that's no bad thing." - CasuallyHardcore.com
