A video review series for every single Doctor Who episode in existence.

I'm very passionate about Doctor Who, and have always wanted to sit through every episode with someone, and I figure it might as well be everyone!

youtube.com/ritchandspace

A long time nerd, and Doctor Who "enthusiast", I enjoy making youtube videos discussing and reviewing the greatest show in the galaxy.  However, I haven't been able to keep up with the demand I receive from my subscribers, nor have I been able to produce the level of quality in the videos that I would like, due to time and financial constraints.

So it occurred to me, that if each of my subscribers donated $2, I would be able to produce lengthy Doctor Who serial and character reviews daily for at least a few months!  So that's at least 30 stories (which is a few hundred episodes).  With enough money, I could cover every episode ever!  In the past, my production quality has been constrained by the reviews being only a hobby that I have to find time and energy to fit in between working minimum wage jobs.

But with these donations, I would be able to produce higher quality videos, with a lot of time, money, and energy devoted to scripting, filming, editing, and more!  (For example, purchasing episodes, Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, a better microphone and maybe camera, and making a little Who-themed set to shoot on!)

So think of this project as being like one of those "Unofficial Doctor Who Guide Books", except in video form, way more fun, interactive, updated daily, and completely free to view!

Before we continue...

Here's a preview video:

What to expect from this project:

I believe that I'm good at discussing the original series' stories in a relatable way.  There's always been a lot of contemporary context to Doctor Who, which can make the older stories harder for modern audiences to grasp.  And if you're not prepared to sit through all of the Black and White stories, or you just can't sit through the Colin Baker episodes, or maybe you just had a hard time getting into or understanding a serial, I will do my best to give you the most accurate understanding of the story that I can.

I'm also fun, I think.  Probably.  At least after some coffee and a martini.  So I hope to also make the videos as fun as possible for a modern audience, educating New Whovians a day at a time!

I believe it would takes about $6000 to fully fund the project over the year it would take to complete.  But for now, I recon we can get away with just funding the first few months, and hopefully building a big enough follower base that more people would be up for donating to "season 2".

Format

I will attempt to release one video per day, Monday through Friday.  The reviews will contain summaries of the stories, as well as analyses of the plot and characters, measured against past stories, and future stories.  I will also do my best to put stories in context for new viewers in terms of both the era in which it aired and within the Doctor Who universe (for example, when UNIT first appears, it will be worth mentioning that its the future employer of one Martha Jones).

Some of my videos have focused on individual characters' lives, which were met with some success, which I may continue to do, but longer, and in greater detail.

As reviews, I'm permitted to use footage from the shows under Fair Use.  This helps me illustrate the reviews of each video.

Currently I'm planning to start with 60s reviews as well as 2005 reviews, alternating.  (Maybe mon/wed/fri for 60s reviews and tues/thurs for 00s reviews.)

The Future

If the project goes well, it could take 6 months to a year to complete the reviews.  However, that won't be the end of it!  Besides the fact that new episodes of Doctor Who come out every year, there are also videos on characters' lives to be done!  Summaries and analyses of companions and monsters!  There are books to be reviewed, and audio plays!  There are writers and actors to be interviewed (I can dream, can't I?)!  It never ends!  (Isn't that the best part about Doctor Who?  It never ends!)

As far as financing, if the project is successful, I will hopefully be able to use google ads to gain enough income to keep up the show!  But for that to work, I need at least the few months that this kickstarter will allow me!  But the more we make here, the longer I can keep this show daily and weekly!
