When Madame's away, little does she know that her two Maids act out an elaborate game of role reversals, meant to end with her demise.
New Theatre Company Makes a Bold Debut with Genet and Project X
SMU Theatre Alumni Make Their Debut with Genet’s The Maids
DALLAS—May 16, 2012 – A small group of recent SMU theatre alumni have created a new theatre company to produce work in Dallas. Their first venture is a bold one: an original production of Jean Genet’s The Maids, to be hosted by Project X in June. This dynamic group of alumni and current SMU students is sure to make an exciting debut in the Dallas theatre scene.
This production of Genet’s The Maids takes place in 1940s Paris and explores the fine line between perception and reality, while plumbing the dark fantasies of the human heart. The play centers on two domestics who bear both an intense love and a profound hatred for their Madame, whose lavish lifestyle controls every part of their existence. The maids come to find an escape in an imaginative world, in which they perform a strange, ritualistic game: they play Madame's murder.
"With outstanding actors and a stellar design team, we are excited to put everything we've learned into practice in our first independent production," remarks Piper Werle, the play's director. "We are excited to work on such an extraordinary text. At its heart, this story is about wanting a better life. In our culture, we are told to make that life for ourselves; the idea being that anyone can do it. Yet that life is more a dream than a reality for people born into poverty versus those born privileged. The Maids explores the blurred lines of reality and imagination, and the danger of crossing those lines."
Best Revenge Productions, a group of actors, directors and designers from the SMU Meadows School of the Arts, will perform their production of Jean Genet’s The Maids, June 8-17 with Project X at The Green Zone in West Dallas.
