About this project

After 3 years of living in the Balkans using dance for social change, I've decided to do one last project that brings together all of the people I've met over the years.

3 Notes in an interactive and collaborative video/ dance project including 30 dancers from Bosnia and Herzegovina  (Mostar and Sarajevo) and Serbia (Belgrade).

Working at first through video exchanges, these dancers from 3 cities are creating choreography together in response to what is seen through video interactions. This process is meant to reflect the true nature and power of dance, one that is non verbal and that transcends all words and boundaries.

Performances will be held in all 3 cities.

Our first performance is scheduled in Sarajevo for April 29!

Boundaries is a key word in this project. In a region where these two countries used to be one just 20 years ago, complexities still remain and new borders are still to be crossed. Many of these dancers have never traveled to the other cities nor have they met each other in person. I have realized that after each collaboration, my projects have prompted further collaborations between the participants . This project therefore aims to further develop these collaborations at a regional level, laying a foundation for future dance activists, with hopes that this process will continue beyond this project.

Over the past 2 months I have been traveling to each city and working with the groups of dancers separately at first, making short videos of the choreography created together. The video interactions are being shown to the participants in the next city, who respond “choreographically” to the art created by the other group. A body of work is being created based only on what is seen through the video interactions, without having the opportunity to talk about the process.

Due to worldwide budgetary restraints, funding that was expected will not come in time for the project. The dancers have been working hard over the past few months and everything is falling in to place. Two performance spaces and all the rehearsal spaces are secured and have been kindly donated by local cultural institutions.  All 30 dancers have graciously donated their time to dance and help in organizing the project!  Travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina has been provided for the Belgrade dancers.

What we urgently need

- Travel for the 20 Sarajevo and Mostar dancers to go to Belgrade.

- Food for all of the dancers while on tour

$2,500 is the bare minimum, Any extra money will go towards the cost of feeding all of the dancers during the performance preparations, and to provide simple costumes

Originally from Philadelphia, Ashley Fargnoli is a dance activist, choreographer, instructor and advocate of promoting dance for social change. While pursuing her undergraduate degree at Barnard College, Columbia University, she learned how dance was used to foster rehabilitation and reconciliation in Rwanda after the genocide. This realization helped her to focus her efforts on using her 18 years of classical ballet and modern dance training with the Rock School of Pennsylvania Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet as a tool for working with sensitive and marginalized populations. Her mission to employ dance in this manner has taken her to Bosnia and Herzegovina to work with Roma populations and then to Kolkata, India to work with survivors of trafficking. While living and traveling in France, Italy, Nepal, Bangladesh and Mauritius, Ashley has developed a unique choreographic style which is a mélange of ballet, modern, Indian and Balkan dance. Ashley is dedicated to using dance as a form of post-conflict mediation and creating choreography that fosters social change. Ashley is currently working in Bosnia and Herzegovina working to spread dance throughout the region.

In addition to her work in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ashley is helping to produce a film about the use of dance therapy with survivors of trafficking, abuse, street children and mental health patients in India. She was also recently selected to attend the world renowned Jacob’s Pillow’s Choreography Lab.
