Emileigh will create a series of how-to repair videos demonstrating repair techniques directed specifically for musicians in Panamá.
This summer, Emileigh will create a series of videos highlighting new repair techniques directed specifically to the students and musicians of Panamá. Since Panamá does not have a string repair shop in the entire country, it is vital for the musicians to learn how to use local and sustainable supplies to repair the instruments themselves.
My History with Panamá City
I have a very close connection and deep appreciation to this region. In January 2012, NEC first sent me to teach and perform at the Panama Jazz Festival’s classical program, Música Clásica. This past September, I personally funded a five day trip to Panamá in which I gave private lessons, held studio classes, and conducted cello choir rehearsals. In January of 2013, NEC sent me back to Música Clásica to teach and perform. I keep in touch with my students via Skype and advice through email and phone conversations.
The reason for Project Panamá 2013
The country of Panamá does not have a single string shop or luthier; the closest repair shop is in San José, Costa Rica. Most students that want to pursue a career in music buy factory made instruments off of the internet. These instruments are overpriced and horribly crafted. On top of the tragic state of the instruments, Panamá has a hot and tropical climate that is very harsh on string instruments. When an instrument breaks, students use anything they can find to repair the instrument. A functional instrument will allow them to work on sound principles and general cello techniques with a bit more ease.
Nuts and Bolts
With the help of a luthier, I hope to create a solution for Panamanian string players. I will create a series of "How-To" repair videos that will help musicians stabilize their broken instruments using materials that are available at their local stores. I will write scripts for my videos in Spanish with the help of my Spanish teacher. The funds raised through this campaign will go to both the production costs (videographer, editor, luthier fees) for the videos, and a fee for my Spanish Teacher.
After the videos are produced, I will travel to Panamá once again to introduce the techniques to the students in person. My trip is supported by the Entrepreneurial Musicianship Department at the New England Conservatory. The videos will also be uploaded to YouTube, and will be accessible by anyone, anywhere! I hope that this series will not only help my students in Panamá, but any musician in need.
I am my student’s link to granting them access to decent instruments and advanced instruction. They are very passionate, have a lot of natural ability, and they are extremely hardworking. I believe that all Panamanian string players deserve a first class music education. I am ready to play a large role in that process now, and well into future. Kickstarter is "all or nothing" so I must reach my goal of $1,750 to receive the funds. Your generous support is greatly appreciated and will offer my Panamanian students a stronger musical education!
**And, for all of you non-musicians out there: A luthier is someone who makes and/or repairs string instruments!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
If this project is not funded, I will not be able to produce the high quality, educational tool that is necessary to help my students and the string players of this region. As a recent graduate, I am dedicating my summer to this project and idea. I am willing to take the risks necessary to get it off of the ground! The luthier I am working with, Erik Grausam, is also dedicated this project, and we are ready to move forward once the funds are in place!
