Auto mechanic by day, urban shaman at night, "A Place in the Sun" describes why Karmu has had a lasting effect on those he touched.
"A PLACE IN THE SUN" is a documentary about KARMU (aka Edgar Warner, 1910-1989) an extraordinary healer and teacher who over the course of four decades, helped thousands of people overcome physical, emotional and spiritual ailments. He was wise, generous, gifted and also hilariously funny; he often used his sense of humor to help people. Everyone who met him would agree with Dr. Andrew Weil's comment, "I never forgot him." Although KARMU'S alternative model of health care was devised many years ago, it presents us with a way to achieve health that is both effective and less expensive than the current model of American medicine that is draining our economy and is ultimately unsustainable. Karmu's model encourages people to use herbs, massage, and positive energy, emphasizing the role of self-care and community support.
An African-American of West Indian descent, he was an auto mechanic by day and an “urban shaman” by night. Beginning in the turbulent 1960s, Karmu’s modest home in Cambridge, MA was open to anyone who sought help and his reputation as a healer and down-to-earth "holy man" drew people from all walks of life. He taught people how to have a balanced life style, a positive mental attitude, a vibrant social and sexual life, and how to use herbs and massage to heal others. His kindness, positivity and integrated approach to health made him a major model for today's holistic health care practitioners.
While he was well known locally, Karmu never became a "media personality"; his story has never been widely disseminated - until now. Our team has sought out people all over the the country whose lives were impacted by Karmu. "A PLACE IN THE SUN” combines contemporary interviews with archival film and audio to illustrate how Karmu's humor, positivity and ability to impart a "plus element" continue to inspire others.
We have completed 80% of the filming. Most of the money we are raising is for post-production costs: editing, color and sound correction, restoration of early film and audio, securing archival footage, music rights, photographic rights and DVD reproduction.
