About this project

Modern Film Fest began in 2009 in Kannapolis, N.C., as a result of the festival founders seeing a change in their community. Kannapolis used to be home of the textile giant,Pillowtex, but once the textile plant closed it was destroyed and replaced with the North Carolina Research Campus. The result is a changing culture, with people from around the world moving to the community.

We have managed to offer movies two years in a row, operating on a shoe string budget of less than $2,000, but we want to offer better programs. For instance, we are trying to raise funds for the Harvey Keitel/J.K. Simmons movie, "A Beginners Guide to Endings."

In addition to screening fees for more top tier films we want to be able to bring guests to the film festival and improve on an event that the community has already embraced.

In addition to our annual three day film festival, we also offer free film screenings at the Davis Theatre, in Concord, N.C. as well as provide a free movie for the City of Kannapolis' summer movies in the park series and we are trying to expand our number of free screenings offered through the year.

I worked as a reporter for 10 years, covering anything from interviews with NASCAR drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Rusty Wallace to a red carpet event with Owen Wilson and Cheech Marin.

I worked for five years at one newspaper, the Independent Tribune, where I covered the cops and courts beat for the daily newspaper with a circulation of 20,000 plus.

I left the Independent Tribune in September 2007 to go into filmmaking and my first feature film was a documentary about the circus I traveled with as a child. The movie, "Tearing Down the Tent," focuses on the Cole Bros. Circus, which my grandparents used to work in. I am a third generation circus traveler who became a repoter before going into filmmaking.

I am currently working on my my second documentary focusing on a local roller deby team, the Blue Ridge Rollergirls in Asheville, N.C.

I will be working on my third feature film, a road trip documentary about the band Hellblinki Sextet, who I will film when I go on tour with them to promote, "Tearing Down the Tent."
