What is DirtyPink 305?

www.dirtypink305.com documents what has happened in contemporary art in Miami, specifically from an artist's point of view.

www.dirtypink305.com was inspired when curator Claire Breukel went to live and work with six of Miami’s most exceptional contemporary artists as part of the LegalArt residency program earlier this year. It began as a personal project, identifying the need to record artist input and opinions. However, the concept very quickly grew in response to an overwhelmingly necessity. Craving serious critical dialogue, as well as historical context, these artists asserted that their ideas and opinions needed to be heard in a public format and made accessible to all—and, ideally online.

www.dirtypink305.com is a space where artists tell their side of the story. It features 5 to 20 minute video interviews of each artist, transcriptions of these videos and online links to all the people, places and things that the artists refer to. In short, DirtyPink305 documents what, where and who really matters to the artist community.

Through these interviews, www.dirtypink305.com uncovers what happens beneath the surface of institutions, highlighting artist-run initiatives and collaborations, and canvassing invaluable individual opinions. This otherwise undocumented oral history will be the most comprehensive collection of the opinions and viewpoints of Miami contemporary artists that exists to date, and will provide the foundation to place contemporary art practice within a greater historical context, creating a new oral, visual and written history of Miami contemporary art.

Why are we doing this?

The last decade in Miami has been prolific, with the inception of Art Basel Miami Beach and the rapid growth of a city becoming a major global art destination. As a result, Miami’s history has largely been written by institutions, collectors, galleries and other art fair affiliates, omitting a crucial voice—THAT OF THE ARTIST. 

www.dirtypink305.com aims to shift the conventional power dynamics of information sharing in an attempt to provide insight into what it means to have made art in Miami over the past 10 years. www.dirtypink305.com is preempting what, we suspect, is a coming decade (even more) dedicated to artists.

We need $12,500 to gather significant content and get www.dirtypink305.com up online. This funding will help cover the costs of meeting with artists for continued interviews, editing and uploading of video, website hosting, release forms and transcription of all of the videos into text with real time links in place.
