We're very excited to bring"The Mighty, Mighty Maomi" to Kickstarter.com
We are Min and Jim Johnson. Our project, “The Mighty, Mighty Maomi” is a comic book series geared for younger readers and is based upon Min’s childhood in China circa 1980. The stories in the series are typically humorous in nature; each one either recounts, or is inspired by actual events in Min’s life.
Through these small, daily life stories, we are able to share with readers the lives of everyday Chinese people, their history, culture and traditions and introduce them to a world that still remains a mystery to most Westerners.
Each issue contains the story in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
The first issue (which is our Kickstarter project) is called “The Big Breakfast”. It is the story of how, one day, Maomi wakes up particularly hungry only to have her breakfast delayed… and delayed… until she can stand it no longer; and how her effort to avoid waiting ends with humorously spicy consequences.
For the curious reader, the English half of each issue also contains, a regular segment called “Maomi’s Ke Tang (classroom)” that teaches the reader the occasional Chinese vocabulary found in the English version.
"The Mighty, Mighty Maomi" will be printed as a standard, black and white comic book with full color covers. Or, more specifically, as two books in one. For example, enjoy the English version of the comic book then, flip the book over and enjoy the Chinese version.

Both the English and the Chinese versions of the first issue are complete. With Kickstarter, we hope to raise enough money to print the first issue of "The Mighty, Mighty Maomi" and to then market and distribute the comic through Diamond Distributors to as many comic book shops as possible.

One is that Mandarin Chinese is Min's native language and English is mine. Another reason is that we want "The Mighty, Mighty Maomi" to reach the widest possible audience.

While "The Mighty, Mighty Maomi" is certainly intended for younger readers, (we believe that there is a huge demand for children's comic books), there is much more to Maomi than humorous stories. For example, anyone, regardless of age, who curious to know about China will learn about Chinese culture and history. Maomi's readers will experience the lives of everyday Chinese people; their customs; the foods they eat; the games they play and the all the things that make Chinese culture unique and different, and yet also familiar.

As you probably know, black & white comics are widely accepted in the mainstream market. (Just think of most manga for example.) Also, black & white comics are less expensive to produce and that will allow us to make every issue of "The Mighty, Mighty Maomi" more affordable. (Besides, black & white art is much easier to color with your favorite crayons.)
