This project is a cinematic collaboration with the world-renowned philosopher, translator and world traveler, Alphonso Lingis. What started in Baltimore as the discovery of Lingis and his work - a hybrid of philosophical inquiry, anthropology, performance and personal connection - has evolved into a journey to Western Africa. Your generous contribution will allow me to travel to Mali for principal photography this March. There, we will work together to capture images of our encounters. Lingis has already written about this part of the world, and this will be a return to the faces and landscapes that, years later, have grown and taken new forms. Nomadic tribes of Mali are not immune to the shifting landscape of globalization, but they live and abide by a certain human connectivity that the film will seek to capture and portray. Twelve years ago, Lingis photographed a boy named Issah in his travels through Mali. In early 2011, we will return to find Issah as a young man to deliver these photographs to him and his family, see how his changing reality has shaped him, and discover new ways of sharing trust with a community outside our own.
This is not a biographical documentary, but rather an examination of the subjects Lingis explores in his life and work. This participatory funding will also be applied to the beginning of post-production, where we will develop original text to accompany our collected imagery.
You can make pledges starting at $10. Every dollar will help and be much appreciated. For all pledges of $50 and up you will receive a unique photographic print from the production.
