First reading of a new musical featuring the songs of the Violent Femmes, one of the most popular alternative rock bands of the 1980's.

THE HISTORY: Two years ago, Gregory Victor and I began conceptualizing a musical using the songs of the Violent Femmes. The Violent Femmes were one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the 1980’s, selling over nine million albums by 2005. Their debut album became the first and only album in Billboard history to enter the charts as a platinum album, eight years after its release. On a whim, we contacted Violent Femmes songwriter and front man, Gordon Gano, to inquire about his interest in such a project. To our surprise and delight, he said, “Yes” and we secured a one-year option on the Violent Femmes catalogue.
THE STORY: Hitting the Ground is about a group of strangers -- a drug-addicted rocker, a beauty queen with a past, a comedian, a war-torn solder and a Rolling Stone reporter about to get the story of his life -- who set out on a USO tour together. Instead, they share an unexpected adventure and more than a few truths. Their itinerary changes drastically when they are forced to jump from their airplane to avoid a crash-landing, only to land in the remote Appalachian mountains. When they encounter an isolated community of devout mountain Shakers, no one is prepared for what happens next; the two cultures collide and combust. As the search planes circle, unforeseen love is discovered, sides are taken, guns are drawn, moonshine flows and a flood of biblical proportions threatens to wash everything and everyone down the mountain.
THE READING: Hitting the Ground will have its first reading for Gordon Gano and a select group of guests on Monday, January 20th of 2014. Co-writer, Greg Victor will direct the reading and Broadway conductor, Debra Barsha will be the musical director. The purpose of this reading is to get permission from Mr. Gano to continue the work and consequently produce the show in an off-Broadway or regional setting. Given a successful tryout, we would then pursue a Broadway production of the show.

YOUR MONEY AT WORK: The great challenge with creating a musical in New York City is the high cost of personnel and rehearsal space. These necessary components are what will bring the pages of dialogue and music to life. In order to present a reading of Hitting the Ground, we must hire a musical director, a music copyist, twelve actors, and four musicians. We will also need several hours of studio rental space for rehearsals and for the reading. This all comes at a high cost. With your generous support, we will have these vital resources at our disposal and accomplish our goal. Every two-dollar donation helps. Thank you all!
