About this project
Hello Everyone,
Short and simple, here’s our project. We’d like to do a small First Edition production run of this brand new - hot off the workbench - fun pop-up-drawing.
This design solves a 4-year challenge of ours: finding an artful way to reproduce our innovative concave drawings.
You can understand our predicament. Afterall, reproducing 'concave' drawings on any 'flat' surface is…well, impossible. That rules out almost all modes of mass-display: books, photos, computer screens, etc. Everything is flat, and for good reason, flat = space efficient. However, one happy medium bridges both worlds…the pop-up! :)
Our design is complete, engineered to a T, and we’re sourcing a manufacturer. Talking shop with several assembly houses, we’re just about ready to move. This is where you come in.
Here’s part of an email from one of the companies we’ve been communicating with:
“I am in absolute awe of your pop up engineering ability. This is unbelievable. Your design is one of the most intricate I’ve seen. Now for the bad news – it’s going to be expensive to produce.”
This manufacturer is the leading contender for the bid. And we’re glad she’s on board. It’s been tough to convince anyone to take this on; people are just spooked by the complexity. But you are not!
With your help, her teams can hit the ground running with our design, buckle down with glue and paper, and the First Edition Oakes-pop-up will be born!
Check out our prizes to the right for varying levels of support. Any amount you donate will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Ryan & Trevor Oakes

The image on this concave pop-up is of The Field Museum in Chicago. We drew it as part of our exhibit there last spring. The original drawing is in the collection of The Field Museum. It is the most intricate rendering we’ve made so far.
