Surfside- a choreographic homage to instrumental vintage surf music, dancers in period-style beachwear and live musical performances.
OUR PROJECT SUMMARY:
Following our first two rousing seasons, Menlowe Ballet brings its ENCORE! to the stage this October. Artistic Director and Choreographer, Michael Lowe, known for his innovative and refreshing style of choreography shines in the company premiere of Surfside - a whimsical 1960s surf-themed work. We are raising funds to cover the production costs for this ballet including costumes, sets, props, dancer rehearsal time, live musical performing guests, and other theater-related expenses.
BACKGROUND AND INSPIRATION
In choreographing Surfside, Michael pays tribute to the memory of his father and their shared love of music. Times spent together listening to the early surf sounds of Sandy Nelson, The Ventures, and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass on vinyl records (while his dad played along on a Salvation Army snare drum), fostered in Lowe an appreciation for that genres unique cultural qualities which contained a melding of Hawaiian, Latin, Middle-Eastern and American Southwest rhythms. The vintage, instrumental surf-rock predated the popular and commercially successful vocal surf music that came later by bands like the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. Surfside is a celebration of the innocence and free-spirited abandon of the music that pre-dated the British Invasion and the shift in musical popularity that would follow.
ABOUT SURFSIDE & FUNDING:
Surfside features 16 dancers clad in period-style beachwear, and a live muscial performance by musicians Paul Stinson of The Radishes and The Stripminers, and John Baker of Lotus Rush and Story Road. Also performing are advanced level students from Menlowe Ballet's official school, the Menlo Park Academy of Dance. Funds raised will be used exclusively for perfomer-related expenses (dancer and musician). Our most critical and significant expense is in the six week rehearsal time for these 16 dancers to prepare for this premiere. In addition, we have created 16 unique costumes designs for our dancers as well as 25 additional costumes for our student performers. The theater sets create an authentic beach scene, supplemented by the props of lifeguard chairs, cafe tables, and beach balls a-plenty.

You can pledge any amount and choose a reward. At the end of our Kickstarter campaign, if the combined total of all pledges for our project meets our $20,000 goal, then the credit cards of those who have pledged are charged and we receive the funds to pay our dancers and Surfside production costs. If we don't meet our goal, then the money is not withdrawn from your account and NO rewards are provided. If we exceed our $20,000 goal then the extra funds will be used to make Surfside and Menlowe Ballet even better. Aside from a 5% Kickstarter fee and a 3-5% Amazon credit card processing fee, all funds raised will be used directly in the production of Surfside.
