To the Moon and Back a short documentary film looking into addiction through the lens of a daughter's eyes.
To the Moon and Back. I remember the fish and chips at a road side dinner as we hitched to Alberta escaping my mother's abusive boyfriend, the 20 dollars she gave me for my 11th birthday that I knew she didn't really have to give, the way she used to get me to steal from our neighbors garden for our dinner, her smile, her laughter, her innocence but there was always one thing I didn't know about my mother and there was one thing I did know, she was an addict.
In 2003 after spending all my life savings as a model on camera equipment, crash courses in filmmaking and editing, and paying for my boyfriend at the time and I to go back to my country, I went home to find the answer to my question, "Why was my mother and addict?" or perhaps it was for the reason I told people, "to help other children understand addiction" , but in reality I think it was really to help the person that would never say she needed it..myself.
"To the Moon and Back" is a heart-wrenching look into the healing relationship between a mother and daughter during their coming-to-terms with the mother's thirty six years of drug addiction. Shot over the course of nine years, we witness many transformations of a mother with a 36 year addiction and a daughter deeply effected by it.
Tarah's intimate journal entries help us understand the process of coming to terms with, who she is, the challenges of filming her mother's situation, and how painful true, loving acceptance can be. We visually experience the strong connection that develops between mother and daughter, and ultimately, we see how this guileless home film saves the lost souls of two beautiful beings.
Shot between Canada's East Hasting, Salt springs Islands, Vancouver island and Bali, this film takes you on a journey to the heart of every relationship, and the only true thing worth fighting for, LOVE "To the Moon and Back" is a captivating story of how the love between a mother and her child can be the most precious gift given in a lifetime.
THAT was the film I was making... till my hard drive crashed again in March, losing months of hard work!! Wanting to quite working on this film after every set back over the past eight years I dug for my last bit of hope after I raised the 2,300 last year only to be faced with ANOTHER set back. However, this time something within me is telling me to not give up, that there IS a purpose for this film, so that is where I am today.
Perhaps this film has a life of its own, perhaps it is not always for me to know how or when it will end, just to trust that it will happen when the time is right. Recently I have met some amazing people whom have given me advice to make a 10 min short that I can show in festivals and do talks with rather then the full length film I was attempting to make so this is the direction I am taking now. I now have on board an amazing videographer Syd Woodward from Grounded T.V: http://www.getgrounded.tv and an amazing editor all willing to get paid way under their normal rates to help out with this project!!
Currently I am in Vancouver and have seen my mom, she is really unwell and was told she has 6 months to live, so I ask of you to please donate what ever you feel in your heart will help see this through to the end and also the end of this story. Thank you for your support!!
