Help us distribute our beautiful independent documentary film about ten New Yorkers who are humbled by the volunteering work they do for the dying.
After one year of shooting and editing this film, we are now ready to distribute an hour long documentary to both film festivals and hospice organizations nationwide to be used as both a creative and educative tool.
ABOUT THE FILM
As busy as their lives may be; ten New Yorkers seek silence by volunteering for the dying. However it is often the dying that have more to offer than the living. LESSONS FOR THE LIVING doesn't give us the bullet point answers that we seek, nor does it cradle us in a heavenly cloud of promise. It humbles us; even if we just sit there and listen.
This is the debut film of director Lily Henderson ThinPlace | Pictures.
WHY THIS FILM IS IMPORTANT:
Before the efforts made by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, author of the best-seller On Death and Dying, and Florence S. Wald to bring awareness of hospice care to the U.S, the dying population in our country was widely underserved and considered a lost cause.
It was this denial in the US, that revealed a lot about our culture’s treatment of not only the dying but also of our humanity.
As an important supporting aspect, President Obama’s efforts to increase volunteerism in America includes 6,000 different categories. In New York City alone, there are over 3,000 Hospice related services to volunteer for.
We'll leave you all with this thought from Kathleen, a hospice volunteer in the film who is also now a hospice patient: "Volunteering takes all the mystery out of dying. That's the most important lesson. Maybe more people should volunteer (for hospice) so it's not some big mysterious thing anymore."
Thanks very much for your support.
