The Problem

After investing in loads of high quality audio and charging devices equipped with the standard 30-pin dock over the last 10 years, we find they are suddenly obsolete with the release of Apple's new Lighting connector devices. What’s more, Apple have still yet to release a true Lightning dock!
The Lightning connector is fantastic, small and reversible, another good reason to upgrade to the new iPhone 5. But what about all of those high quality audio devices you bought for the home, the office even the car. Nothing has changed, they still sound great and charge your phone.

The Solution

So how do we set things right. Well Apple have provided part of the solution, their Lightning to 30-pin connector works great, allows for charging and audio on pretty much all 30-pin docks. But it doesn't give any support to your device and so puts heaps of strain in the 30-pin dock and Lighting connector. We all know how fragile that 30-pin connector can be.

The solution - Flybridge, the 30-pin to Lightning dock adapter.
Made from strong ABS-PMMA plastic, Flybridge reassuringly snaps into any standard 30-pin Universal dock. You then slide in your Apple purchased 30-pin to Lightning dock adapter and you are flying. The large platform and raised bridge support accommodates almost all Lightning equipped Apple devices such as the:
iPhone 5
iPod Touch 5th generation
iPod Nano 7th Generation
iPad Mini

Compatibility

We have tested compatibility with many leading brands such as Sony, Bose, Bang & Olufsen, JBL, Yamaha, Belkin and Logitech. What is clear is all standard 30-pin universal docks are compatible with our Flybridge and all devices charged and played music through the Apple connector.
We also need to add that as can be seen in the images and video, that the Flybridge also works with all Apple manufactured docks that use the Universal snap in inserts. So you can convert these 30pin docks to Lightning as well.

Aesthetics

We have devoted a lot of time into creating something that integrates well with your devices and looks like it belongs. With the Flybridge and the Apple connector, you can convert your existing audio equipment or Apple docks and they will look like the were always a Lighting device. We didn't want to create something that looks like a patch job. Be the first to have a Lighting equipped HiFi ! Don't throw all your great looking gear away. Like everyone else, I wanted to get the new iPhone but have heaps of legacy equipment that I really like, so it was a tough decision to get the iPhone 5 and not use this gear. Well now with the Flybridge it looks good and I can use my iPhone 5 everywhere.

Prototyping and Testing

As you can see from our images and video here in the Kickstarter project, we have created a couple of high quality prototypes of Flybridge from CNC machined ABS plastic and then painted them up to look like the real thing. Our plan is to injection mold these parts, we have already worked with our Asian vendors on developing the mold strategy and packaging. Everything is ready to go, so that's why we need your help - to start the mold, get production happening and ship.

The angled back support bridge offers ample contact on even an item as large as the iPad Mini, the distance from the back of these devices and the connector point is easily accommodated in one  dock adapter unit. We also made the platform wider to give better support to the larger iPad Mini.

No part of the Flybridge adapter extends beyond the extremities of the dock insert perimeter, just in case your dock equipped audio units have parts of their housings extending above the dock plane.

We have added PMMA to the ABS base polymer to provide that really high gloss finish that we all like in our products and will mold in black and white to start, which we figure matches most devices on the market. In the future, there is no reason why we can't manufacture in a range of great colors.

My Story

Based in Redwood City, California, I have 20 years experience as a professional Industrial Designer. I have a small product design studio called Luxxbox with an office in California and Australia. I have developed products for clients across the US and the world including the likes of Google, Wholefoods and Ridley Scott's Prometheus movie. I have a great deal of experience in developing products such as these and getting them to market.
