The Atlas Review is a new lit magazine in pursuit of prose & poetry from known and unknown writers who thrash w/ beautiful purpose.
The Atlas Review is a new literary magazine comprising poetry, fiction, essay, and art, which will publish twice a year in print, but only with your help. In the closely-knit communities of writers, we sometimes forget there is a world beyond our immediate geography. Our mission is to alter this world of writers to include voices outside of prescribed communities. We hope to achieve this through a blind submission system: we won’t know who you are outside of your work; we will only know the voice you come in with and this is the voice we wish to know. A lot of magazines are interested in big names; many others seek out the lesser known. We want to do both, and we know this marriage will create dialogues otherwise improbable.
Already, Issue 1 is set to publish poems by Eileen Myles, Anna Akhmatova and Daniil Kharms as translated by Ilya Kaminsky & Katie Farris, Kathleen Ossip, Joe Hall, and many others. The gap here is the rest of the world, and we are now accepting submissions through November 1st. But first, we hope you can help us achieve our goals with your donations.
We need to raise enough money to pay for a printer, so that you can hold these issues in your hands. We want to be able to pay our designer for the hard work and time. We want to—one day—even be able to pay our contributors. But we can’t begin to do any of this without support. Your contribution will add to the beauty, labor, and collaboration we hope to make standard within each issue. We thank you for any contribution you’re willing to give us and we will reward you with a bounty of literary treasures. Our reward levels include postcards, subscriptions, and a bundle of books from small presses like YesYes Books, Publishing Genius, Black Ocean, and Wave. We promise also in return to create a magazine fit for your generosity and encouragement. We’re beyond excited and already feel your love in a big way.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The biggest challenge right now is making sure we have enough money to send our issues to a quality printer. This number can get pretty substantial if we are to publish a 50- to 70-page issue with intentions to widely distribute it across the country. We will continue to raise money by hosting various reading series' in which there will be suggested donations.Subscriptions of $20 per year will also help us stay afloat in subsequent production windows.
We will maintain a high bar in what we publish, and will stay vigilant about balancing out big names and new voices. We hope that by doing this, our readers will trust us to always produce consistently good work. We believe in the power of good work, and know this will be the biggest payoff of all.
