Paolo donated a room in his Greenpoint apartment to the project for the duration of the summer. It is great to have a common place where we can all meet, share ideas, and make kites. So far, these are the steps involved in making the kites and the people who get the job done!
Tom (pictured below) - Disassembles ripstop nylon windbreakers by taking off sleeves and notions to prep fabric. We use the back and sleeves because they are the flattest.
Whitney - Prototypes. Whitney makes cardboard templates of each kite design, which we then all get to fly and make any adjustments needed. Once the design is tested, tried and true, Whitney diligently cuts them out.
Lee - Sewing. The ex-fashion student, Lee Dares, stitches away on her Singer Heavy Duty machine, figuring out the best technique to maximize tautness and balance of each kite.
Paolo - Bridles. Paolo is currently trying out different weights of flying line to find the best for the bridles. The line can't be very heavy because the kites are so small, but mustn't break in strong winds either! In his spare time, he casually collects driftwood to carve into spools.
Zebadiah - Quality control. Zebadiah inspects each one to make sure the spars are the right length and sit flat on the kite. He is also working on designs for a limited-edition series of kites, but shhhh!!!
That's all for now, folks!
