We’ve been raised not to talk about religion. Not to ask questions about others’ faiths. Instead of being polite, it’s led to fear and intolerance and misunderstanding.
This project is my response to the overwhelming religious hatred we hear almost everyday. Funding is requested to travel to a few special subjects, to print and frame work for exhibition, and to produce a book. I will be matching my goal with personal funds.
Through intimate portraits of religious leaders and lay people, my goal is to put a human face on religions we might not understand or know about. Put a person with a practice or an idea .
The project I am beginning is based on three fundamental principles:
1. There is more than one path to God.
2. People of faith are PEOPLE first.
3. All people are people of faith.
I propose a series of photographic portraits that will put a human face on people of faith. I will work with subjects to capture their sense of practice or understanding of their faith practices and principles. Subjects will include theists and non-theists, people in traditional organized faith traditions and those whose practices and idea are unorthodox, private citizens and public figures. Each subject will be asked be write a short essay to accompany the photograph.
The series is intended to capture to breadth of religious understanding among people, and to further the definition of God. The work will be presented as a public exhibition, on on-line exhibition and discussion, and a published book.
This specific series continues the work that was begun with non-traditional portraits of Jewish women and published nationally in the 2008-09 Women of Reform Judaism Art Calendar.
A website and blog, http://www.daretotouchthefaceofgod.com and http://daretotouchthefaceofgod.blogspot.com have been created to mark progress and provide interaction and conversation among participants, the artist, and the general public. Comments from the blog may be incorporated into the final exhibition. The website and the exhibition will encourage visitors to add their experiences and images to the whole.
Overall, this is a project to promote tolerance and understanding. I am very grateful for your help to make it a reality.
