What is Cubiciti?

Cubiciti is an educational toy that allows a child to construct a cityscape using patent-pending modular blocks. The building blocks offer a variety of shapes, colors and patterns that inspire children to create streets, parks, houses, and other buildings and bring their city to life. Cubiciti encourages children to imagine ideal cities or emulate places they are familiar with as they create and re-create landscapes by snapping blocks into the grid of holes on the tray base. The blocks can be rotated to allow for four different alignments to accommodate surrounding block features. Once built, the city becomes a functional play area for the cars provided with the blocks. Cubiciti can grow with children by connecting more bases together to make larger and larger cities.

How It Began

Our inspiration came from our son. He loves cars and is always looking for new settings and environments in which to play with them. His active imagination has inspired us to create a one-of-a-kind, modular, and educational media for orchestrating his car adventures. We call it Cubiciti. The first Cubiciti was created for our son, and he enjoyed it so much that we want to share it with other children as well as the young at heart.

Cubiciti was created as a tangible toy that challenges the imagination and creativity of every child with straightforward and uncomplicated shapes. Cubiciti enhances a child’s development by providing a means to explore spatial skills, organization, and planning in a fun and colorful way. This imaginative play is crucial for normal social, emotional and cognitive development. 

A few of the learning benefits include:

- Promotes creativity by encouraging children to dream up new cityscapes using the different colored and shaped blocks and by using their imaginations to make their new city come alive.

- Enhances fine motor skills through the handling, assembly, and construction of the cityscape as well as through maneuvering cars around the city streets.

- Develops spatial skills by rotating and assembling parts and snapping the blocks to the base

- Encourage problem solving by challenging the child to plan out city features and organize the blocks to create roads and pathways that allow access to structures.

- Tunes visual processing skills through the use of different shapes, colors, textures, and part-to-whole relationships.

- Develops Encourage imaginative play by using the provided cars on the children’s dream city.

Imagine the possibility

Currently Cubiciti is a basic platform for creating imaginative cityscapes. The possibilities for expansion are limited only by imagination and might include different shapes, colors, and structures such as bridges, towers, etc. The basic platform could also be expanded by making a water theme with features like beaches, lakes, canals, etc. 

How It’s Made

Each wooden block has a 1”x1” solid square base with various features crafted on top. The standard edition will be made from birch, and a limited edition set will be walnut. The blocks are large enough to be easily grasped by small children, making them fun to handle and play with for children of all ages. The blocks are painted using a non-toxic, water-based paint and clear sealant.

Where the Funds Will Go

Kickstarter funds, after Kickstarter and Amazon fee, will be used for injection mold tooling ($40K for 5 tools) for the initial manufacturing of the Cubiciti parts ($10K for plastic parts). The rest of the funds ($2K) along with my personal investment will be used toward setup fees and the purchase of wood materials.
