First let me start by stating how sincerely sorry I am for not keeping the FB up to date. The past two months have blurred together as time has flown by. Balancing a heavy workload and the film’s production has been difficult.
It has been over a year since the trailer, so what is taking so long?
During the summer, we made significant progress; however, once the new school year started, I lost two full-time workers and one intern. I also started teaching a double overload of classes, leaving only weekends to work on the film. So workflow and progress on the film has slowed to a trickle. I have spent many of my off hours catching up on schoolwork. Things are starting to pick up again with the hire of a part time editor and the end of the first school quarter. Some of my colleagues in whom I confide have questioned— on numerous occasions— my decision to take on such a project while teaching an overload. The demands of both my job and the film when combined are immeasurable. One commitment always has to give way to the other at various times, and it remains a constant struggle. And yet, I will not accept that undertaking the film was a mistake. I do, however, apologize for underestimating the amount of conflict my job and this film would pose to one another. The unforeseeable events of the class overload and duration of the film’s production have made and will continue to make these last few phases of the film ‘s development difficult, but not impossible.
What happens now?
As my teaching colleagues will attest to— I am a perfectionist. I did not like some of the footage and interviews obtained, so I went back and re-interviewed, shooting additional footage (refereeing segment, final acts for two of the 5 storylines, and misc b-roll). Much work still needs to be done, but I feel comfortable in saying that we have 99% of the footage I need and want. I am aware that patience is growing thin, and that many may feel like the film is long past its promised release date. However, I assure you that I am still working on the project and hope to present it in a way that pleases audiences, honoring the sport that I respect, admire, and love.
The Film’s release
We still intend to release the film by running it through a series of film festivals. Private screenings of course will be available. Our primary target from the start has been the general audience. This has constantly been on my mind and has had a significant impact on every decision made on the film.
